Then breaking the silence, the metal shrieked against the asphalt, twisting around itself with sparks that lightened up the dark like fireworks. The echo of the scream that had proceeded it had died. A spark, a small spark, started the fire. A body had been tossed from the wrecked Volvo that lay upside down in the ditch. In the light from the burning car on the road the body started to move. A bonepipe were protruding the skin on one arm, the clothes were bloody and somewhat shredded. She had yet to feel the pain from her arm, the broken ribs and collarbone. A small stream of blood ran along her face from a wound on her head. The girl, at most sixteen years old, blinked against the light of the fire, confused and in chock. She looked around, looked at the familiar car that lay in the ditch and the car that were mostly left on the road. A body had gone through the windshield and the flames now licked the body. Drunk and tired, with no reason to get behind the wheels in the first place, the man had lost control over the car and had swerved over to the wrong side. He had hit them straight on even if she thought her father must have tried to avoid the crash. The man was dead, from where she stood she saw that his head was crushed. She turned, staggered towards the other car, calling out their names. At that point the gas tank on this car was reached by flames and as it exploded it tossed her backwards and she landed on her back. As she came to again, as she saw the car and the ones left inside on fire, she screamed, a wordless scream with her tears running. The tears mixed with blood and dirt as she sunk down towards the ground. She watched their body’s burn, unable to look away and she didnt stopped screaming until she passed out.

“Svea?”

The blonde woman looked up from the book she was trying to read. Just a few pages in and she had a hard time concentrating. She was on her third attempt on this page alone.

"Yes?”

Benny had been kind to help her watch over the stud’s only pregnant mare. Some virus had cause the other to lose their foals but by some miracle, perhaps due to the fact that she had been shipped to Canada to be covered and remained there til they were sure she was with foal before she came home. Nut had been covered by Ray, one of the first horses she had sold. He was the son of Awry who in turn was son of the mighty Veridical. Nut had been given to her by Jace since he had decided to remain by his father’s side.

“I think you need to come, I have buzzed the vet as well. I don’t know if we need help or not but I thought it was better to be safe than sorry.”

Svea sighed and got up. How she longed for those moments when she could, at least for a short time, act somewhat careless, the burden and shackles loosened and without having so much and so many to depending on her. That she could be free. It didn’t help that she worried over her friend. Shannon’s duedate had come and passed. At the latest visit at the doc they had said if nothing had happened by Monday they would induce her.

Hours had passed since they went out to the barn. It was a new day. The foaling itself had gone smoothly, no hitch at all even if it had looked like it as it started. The woman looked at the prone form in the stall and the small one that stood by the side of it. Benny had gone to phone the vet. Svea dried a tear off her cheek. It was never easy to lose a horse. She needed to get a nurse mare now. If Nee had her foal, she had let the foal in with her, since the mare produced milk like a cow. She heard footsteps and she turned around.

“Is the vet coming? We need to try and milk what we can from her before she gets too cold… Ben? What’s wrong?”

“The hospital called…you…you need to go…its Shannon…”
