Description
I don't know if you guys have experienced similar encounters but it happens to me quite often - I also have some funny variations on the theme I might turn into a comic. So outdoor sketching is never an activity I can enjoy in peace - and it's not like I draw in public because I want to show off or draw attention... I kinda hide in a corner all the time.
But maybe I have this happy/intense expression on my face and people want to know why...
At first I did not have an answer to the question. I used to say... I'm addicted to it.
Then I started saying that drawing helps me understand and remember what I see better.
Then again... I think sketches are milestones in life and when I try to explain that I like something to stay there and ground that moment so that the past might lead me to the future... I kind of lose the person's attention already.
hahahaha

This, in my humble opinion, is so true! I love to look back at where I have come from in my art!

O-O if the animals would stay still long enough, I'd draw them.. otherwise I find it easier to draw from pictures.. But then I don't get the understanding or angles I want :C Curse you life-drawings!

It takes practice. You start from the slow ones and then move onto the more difficult ones, leave felines for last because they have seriously weird proportions

horses are tricky because if you get the face too short they look like dogs. hahaha.

I would ponder going over and talking to you! It's so rare to see people draw in public in most circumstances.
I love talking to people who draw what they see, I have a hard time doing that, so I'm usually realy impressed ^^
Personnally I don't mind being asked questions, it doesn't happen often enough for me to mind ^^

No one has ever come to talk to me because I sketch outside. I guess it's because we're in Finland - it's not seen as good manners to disturb someone who seems to be busy with something... or anything.

When I was in Japan, people always waited for me to finish then asked politely to see.
in Asia, in general, people don't ask questions but maybe they take pictures of you and your sketches hahaha.
When I was in the Us people would ask me questions all the time and here in Singapore... it's mostly tourists, not so much locals, asking question.
Or kids. No matter where... kids would talk to me

I remember when I was in Germany. I drew a sketch of one of my friends and a woman say by me (we were on a train) and I saw her lean towards me and my sketch many times. But she never said anything. And a couple of days ago I sketched something on bus and I felt someone was staring behind my back. It was a young man and he quickly turned his head away from me. I wouldn't really mind if people asked something or wanted to talk, it would be a good conversation starter.

Majority of people would just stare but if you are in a very crowded environment you are bound to find people who ask questions. I've had people taking photos of my sketchbook instead of the thing in front of them and I also met with very annoying/intrusive people that made it impossible to finish the drawing.

I've had only people give passing looks from afar--though some of them were security guards, so I was wondering what they thought I was doing... XD

"Why aren't you?" Yep, great answer! Better than mine.... "I'm brainstorming ideas to freak out my therapist."

I love the first response, "why aren't you?" Like it's so natural it's normal!

I was once writing in a karaoke-bar in my sketchbook. I was writing down the song-list since I wanted to learn how to sing in private and not in person, so I wrote it down so I'll know what songs to practice and what I can sing in there later. (only the ones I knew from before or which seemed interesting to remember)
but then a random very wasted old creep comes to my table and starts to have a conversation by asking "Why are you writing/Why do you write?" (in a crappy mood)
...during that awfully painful and long conversation this is mainly what I heard from his mouth:
"Your dreams will never come true."
"You will never be a writer."
"You cant draw. / You will never be able to draw anything."
"It's a waste of time" (art-vise)
"You will never graduate to your 'dream' degree." (I told him that I had already graduated long ago, and he repeated that)
"You will NEVER have your dream job."
"You're a waste of everyone's time. / You shouldn't exist" (kinda like that, cant remember how exactly.)
along with other slurs and cursing.
...and my damn ex-boyfriend didn't even CARE about the whole situation. mutual friend of ours had to come to the table to keep me company and to "try" to get the creep away (he left to get my ex quite soon after the old creep started asking if he was my boyfriend and cursing me infront of him. "Why would anyone ever be with HER!?" / "She's useless!" / "A waste of your time!" kind of slurs. )
.............after more minutes my ex finally shows up and after saying that I was his the old creep finally shut his god damn mouth and left after a while.
...gives a pretty good in-sight on how much my ex-boyfriend cared about me nor how bad I felt at these kind of situations..
this was the first experience that came to my mind without thinking. I'd add more if I remembered thou........

This is why I wear large headphones when I'm outside drawing, so people won't talk to me every 5 minutes.

That is a cute representation of something that happens to you! And I love your answer, it is probably one of the best explanations for drawing I've ever heard.
Very awesome work, as always!
