Description This cartoon addresses statements made recently by the Pope in a new book, when he said condoms might be permissible under certain conditions, those conditions being when the alternative is the spread of HIV by male prostitutes. He referred to condoms in this situation as "the lesser of two evils," and later clarified his position by saying that even though this also applies to female prostitutes, the Church still officially forbids contraceptives in cases where they would prevent conception between couples.

The cartoon can be viewed on my website here .

I am so confused.
Surely he could've stated that in a less roundabout way?
I have no idea.

I don't see this recent condom statement made by the Pope as a contradiction, to be honest with you.

The Church hasn't wavered from its position on the use birth-control, as you even acknowledge in your description. As a whole, the Church believes all life (from conception until death) is sacred. Therefore, it still views birth control as a disruption of the natural life cycle by taking away the primary function of sex as procreation and preventing future humans from existing. The fact the Pope is saying the use of condoms is permissible under certain circumstances is actually keeping within that view of the sacred body, because he's acknowledged condoms can prevent the spread of communicable diseases between partners. Having sex outside the confines of a marriage is still considered a sin, but he's saying it is less grave to simply have sex than to infect someone because of it.

The only reason he makes the distinction between male and female prostitutes is due to the idea of life being sacred. Male prostitutes don't have the problem of impregnating their patrons (unless they are female) so protection from diseases like HIV and AIDS would be the only reason to use condoms. In the case of female prostitutes the Church has a mixed stance, because condoms can serve to protect the women and their partners, but it also interrupts what could potentially be the start of a human life. So, the Pope is basically saying that the Church can see the merit of condoms used as protection against HIV and AIDS and would consider it a "lesser evil" to have sex safely than to potentially harm someone through it, but still stands firm on the contraceptive use of condoms as wrong.

I don't see this recent statement made by the Pope connected in any way to child molestation within the Church either. Rape in any context is horrid, and the Pope absolutely doesn't condone such a disgusting act. As I said before, the Church views all life as sacred, and certainly the life of a child is viewed as such. Problems with priests are dealt with (for the most part) within the diocese they serve. Some American clergy in particular seem to have a history of doing things without the consultation of Rome, so I would scrutinize closer to home when dealing with cover-ups and poor judgment in prosecution. Trust me, if I had the chance I would personally send molesters to Hell where they belong, but I don’t agree with representing any group based on a minority that violates the very principle upon which the whole was founded.

All that being said, I really appreciate the artistic value of this cartoon. It has great symbolism, especially the shadow of the Pope’s chair sheltering the priest, and your detail in expressions never ceases to intrigue me XD

I visited a Catholic school this weekend. They had images of the Pope all over the place. Quite frankly, it worried me that they were honoring a man who hasn't done enough about children getting molested and raped by priests. Now this condom fiasco... this all makes him seem like a very perverted person underneath.

So the pope clarified his position by contradicting himself even further?
Boy, the church sure knows how to help their case...

I wonder if the catholic church is protecting their pedophile rapist priests as an attempt to avoid bad press by covering it up. That is a mistake that I think many have made. They would have gotten better press, or at least less of the bad press, if they had just prosecuted the offenders.
