Description
My first piece of space art that I've done. Very time consuming but fun experience. All I started with was a flat B&W clay render of the ship (USS Spirit, modeled/designed by Mark Rademaker) and the old probe is an Orion class space vehicle modeled by Walter Myers. The planet was a stock image can't recall from where.

I really like this, it's fresh, balanced but also tells a story from an unusual vantage point, that makes you want to see more of the ship and its adventuresΒ

I found only a few B&W renders of this ship floating around (no pun intended) & this perspective interested me the most. I've toyed with the idea of making another scene with this ship, thanks for comment!

Many thanks beltminer, guess it kind of has that looming perspective of the ship eh?

heck yes but not just that. i love how there's a story unfolding, probably lots of stories. this is the kind of book cover art that has sold millions of books. you know the kind, the story never quite as cool as that dramatic picture on the front. awesome stuff. makes me want to learn to work in three dee. can i ask, how was the tractor beam done. super cool.

Haha, know that all too well. This piece has 3d as a base point, I just did a paint-over of a basic render, here's what I started with: [link]
The tractor beam is just some photoshop trickery. Specifically, a tweaked light beam/ray brush I found, then under the layer blending options and add an outer glow with some noise, and gradient overlay of a similar color for a highlight. The particles inside the beam are done with a separate layer using a brush on a scatter setting and adjusting the layer transparency setting to "divide" for contrast.

Nice work! If you ever decide to make a sci-fi artwork book yourself, I'd be first in line to buy.
Thanks for the heads-up on these other artist's who've influenced you; I'll definitely check them out.

Why thank you! If I manage to output enough work done to fill one...currently it'd just fill a large pamphlet.

Interesting design of the main craft, seems a crossover between some next gen era trek and andromeda. Great work on the tractor beam or scanner or whatever it represents in this image, thats a really sweet effect. Instant I'd have to say

Woot, thank you! I tend to overthink stuff like that while making photoshop comps like this, as in the hazy lighting fx of the background space debris could also make particulates in the tractor beam glitter and defuse. Lol, is there a anti-nerd pill yet for our affliction?

It looks like a shuttle made for carrying a cargo container.

Bigger than a shuttle with 5 decks, but it certainly looks like it would adapt some kind of module in the back eh?

Now that I've been to the site, I know what it really is. It just looked so shuttle like, but it was really an enlongated streamlined primary hull.

Feel free to check out Mark Rademaker's site [link] He's one awesome Trek ship designer, also did the Aventine from the DS9 novels and if you ever check out the Ships of the Line calendar he's got some beauties there too.
