Description I realized after doing my concept of a humanized GLaDOS that I had been working off her Portal 2 form, rather than Portal 1's. I then realized it might be an interesting artistic challenge to see if I can make a Portal 1 variant of my humanization, and make it look like it could transition between the two games with only some cosmetic changes.

The fun part was figuring out how to make her look more like her first version - thus the gray and the personality Cores. The other thing I decided to try doing is suggesting that my humanized GLaDOS' long hair is grown out from the intervening time between Portal and Portal 2. A sort of computer Rip Van Winkle thing, I guess. So that meant I had to work out a short-haired variation of the personification's style. I really wanted to keep the duo-toned, "cover one eye" look, so that's why it's the way it is here.

I originally wanted to go with the style of my more literal GLaDOS humanization from a little while back, and put them on her back, but it just didn't want to work with this design. I then realized since her jacket looked a little military that making a pair of metal shoulderboards and sticking the Cores on those worked nicely enough. She's pretty authoritarian in Portal, anyways. >_>;;

I think all in all it worked out well, and looks believable for something that could transition into Portal 2. (I know I didn't show the bottom of her labcoat/smock, but basically I envision it and her legs looking the same.

Sorry for the sorta blah color on the background - I just could NOT pick a color that wouldn't clash with the Cores, her complexion, or her jacket.

GLaDOS and Portal are copyright Valve.

Now that, is my the most favourite concept of a humanized GlaDOS.

The choice of a military style uniform, which portrays her dominance of the underground abandoned aperture science, with the cores on her shoulders, is absolutely mind-blowing to me, and shows what she's in charge, she's the one with the high rank, no one messes with her.

Well, except for Chell that is...but GlaDOS still rules!

Ooooh I really dig the hair and the suit on this, the shoulder area especially. I agree with the comment below me, it's not something I've seen before and it really is refreshing.

Thank you. I really wanted to try and do something different from the usual GLaDOS humanizations. Glad you liked it!

Wait a minute. This is wonderful! I've never seen this design from you! I love her hair and her suit design. It's a breath of fresh air to see something different instead of the same thing over and over again as far as android GLaDOS goes.

Thank you. I really wanted to make my humanoid designs different since after a while, everyone's designs start to mesh together in my head.

If this is the real GLaDOS we have to fight in Portal, it will be extremely difficult to knock off the personality cores and not to mention to find them too since they are so small!

It is really interesting how completely different she looks between the two games. Nice job with the redesign!

Thanks.

Yeah I figure mostly the change is due to that explosion at the end of the first game blowing all kinds of stuff off her, and of course, by P2, she's having to kitbash some kind of repairs together.

It's my fluff explanation, I can't help it. I have fun trying to come up with explanations for continuity quirks like that.

That is such an awesome design! I LOVE her hair and how you included the personality cores. On a few designs I have seen them quite awkwardly placed (some even have them on her boobs O_o), but I like them lined up on her shoulders like that.

Aww, thank you.

I'm deciding whether or not to move them around on her shoulders a little, and I may still try something.

But I'm glad you liked the rest of her design.

You're welcome! Don't move them, I think they're great like that!

Haha, ok. I won't.

That reminds me, I have another Flashback GLaDOS piece I did kinda out of boredom last night (and accidentally setting my canvas to all-black, which gave me the idea for the crazy lighting), that I need to upload.

She looks way more evil in it, I have a friend who doesn't go on DA who commented this particular GLaDOS is cute I think in the "she's a really cute girl" sorta way. So I need a more evil variant. Just for laughs.

Oooh! I like the hairstyle. It's a short style without looking like every other bob in the fandom. And I like the idea of her hair growing out between games.

I like the idea of the cores on her uniform, but they feel a little awkward on her shoulders. Maybe make them more disk like, and have them as medals on the front of her jacket? They'd end up being smaller, but would look more "military." Ignore me if this is a finalized design. I didn't see anywhere if you wanted const-crits on your art. (Can you even do that anymore on devArt? I don't remember seeing the selection when/if I upload my own stuff.)

DeepChrome In reply to Kyuohki [2011-07-20 04:19:38 +0000 UTC]

Eh I leave it up to the commenter whether or not to crit.

Thanks on the hairstyle comment. Yeah I get tired of seeing the same style on her all the time. It's even more exasperating when I've basically gotten my hair cut in a less drastic variation of the same bob.

As for more military-style, I might play with it. The Cores do look a bit odd where they are. I'll definitely putz with it - maybe head back more towards mad scientist, which was the inspiration for the main personification's look. Hey, I went through like 3 versions of my "main" GLaDOS-personification desigh before settling on my current long-haired one, so I can put up with doing a few revisions on this Portal 1 version.

Oh, good. I'm always leery on giving const-crits on stuff now. I had a whole bunch of people snarl at me once, including the original artist. I was only trying to help! ;_; I think they had const-crits listed as okay, too. *so confused*

DeepChrome In reply to Kyuohki [2011-07-20 05:07:06 +0000 UTC]

Wait.

Constructive crit got snarled at?

And they set their deviations as accepting crit?

Wow.

Okay, I'll try to help explain that best as I can cause I've been on both sides of that fence...

One: Sometimes they're just in the wrong mood to take even the best and mildest-given crit. I've been there. Cleaning up after that one is not fun.

Two: Sometimes they set it, and generally get glowing crits, and then along comes your honest, constructive crit and well...we all know DA's full of drama-queens right? If you get used to that one ahead of time, the nice ones become such a wonderful surprise to come across. DAers have a habit of just gushing over stuff, and then wham, you get the one honest one who tells you you've got work to do. It's not the best of feelings, but if you're looking to get that kind of crit, it's not going to bother you, ya know?

Three: They may really, really, really be stupid. Which is what your situation sounds like, as far as I can tell....

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Kyuohki In reply to DeepChrome [2011-07-20 05:20:46 +0000 UTC]

It was probably a combo of all three. I like getting crits on my own work, and I do tend to get wordy when I actually crit stuff. Which probably startled them as well. (I've been trying to tone it down. I get whole paragraphs written, then go in and cut all the useless stuff out. I ramble a lot.)

Looking back on it, it's actually amusing, because they all called me a troll. I've never been accused of that before. XD

I like reviewing, and if I'm not dead tired, I try to write out what I liked first, then what could be improved on if the artist/writer states they want more than "Tht wuz gud, plz write more!" That's mostly because I want to see the same on my stuff.

And I've been there on the bad day to receive crits. And I have posted the knee-jerk replies too. Definitely not fun to clean up after that.

DeepChrome In reply to Kyuohki [2011-07-20 05:24:09 +0000 UTC]

I like to do that kind of crit too. One-word crits are, to me, just plain lazy.

If I don't have that much to say I'll just say a few sentences. If there's more to it, I'll go ahead and say it.

Generally I can get away with critting specific details I like, and focusing on that. That's usually not too wall-of-text-ish, and still comes off as "making an effort," at least the way I see it.

Dunno if it helps.

And yeah I like crit on my own art. Just not massive pick-every-freaking-thing-that's-wrong critting. I don't mind if someone finds something that needs fixed or improved. Just...don't go overboard is all.

So as a fellow electronic motormouth, I know how that feels. -.-; I type 110 WPM on a good day...which makes chatting fun when I'm too excited. :F
