Description Those of you who keep up-to-date with Homestuck have noticed the current trend of Dave's emotions.

Dave fascinates me. I'm not entirely sure why but his cool badassery is definitely part of it. I'm also intruiged by characters who show chinks in that super-calm facade, showing that they are still human, that they actually do care, and so on.

So....let's recap a few things about Dave.

**WARNING: SORT OF SPOILERRIFIC IF YOU HAVEN'T CAUGHT UP. SO PLEASE IF YOU HAVE NOT READ ALL THE WAY UP TO THE CURRENT UPDATE BEWARE!! I AM NOT TO BLAME IF YOU WENT AHEAD AND READ THIS DESPITE THE WARNING AND GOT ALL CRANKY. KARKAT MODE OFF. Also, if you want to fast-forward over spoilerr-ish things, just jump to where it says END POSSIBLE SPOILERS in Karkat-style caps. Thanks. ^_^**

Back when he saw his first "doomed self" he had a bit of a BSOD, staring at the blood on his hands. Then he makes an immediate plan to cool the time-travel a bit.

He also has a definite soft spot for Jade. Rather than letting her see the above-mentioned Dave corpse and freaking out about it, he chucks the corpse out of his window. A Future Dave even helps as Jade's server player when John started that job and became derailed from it by his quest.

We've also learned that he can't kill one of his otherselves to become a God Tier hero. I suspect it's the above BSOD over his own doomed selves that leads to this. And I really can't blame him; but it makes him human. More human than he lets on.

And now.......the biggest spoiler.....we learn Bro has died, and that Dave is now, at the current update, at the site of the battle. The conversation he had with Terezi about it is....telling, to say the least.

SO, all that in mind, I get the distinct impression he is headed for a very character-developing emotional breakdown. All this time he seems to have been taught, trained even, to keep his cool no matter what the situation. He's usually got that deadpan expression, and hides his emotions behind that veneer of ironic half-poetry he spouts. But I think it's obvious - and most of you who are current on Homestuck - think it's obvious that facade he keeps up is starting to crack.

And why wouldn't it? All the kids have gone through one hell or another by now.

***END POSSIBLE SPOILERS***

Anyways I drew this a while back when I realized I had a developing Dave fandom, and had gone past the section where he's having trouble coping with the idea of alternate-timeline versions of himself dying.

Sooo, I spent probably three days off and on with this thing, trying to get it to a higher quality level than my usual stuff. I stuck to the limited MSPA-style color palette, and wanted to make the red, black, and white really stand out. I wanted to get it close to the caliber of some of the cutscene art we've seen in Homestuck already, if only to prove to myself I could make my style mesh with somebody else's.

(I also kinda ship Dave and Jade, which is why she's there hugging him.)

Anyways, there you have it. A friend of mine critiqued the WIP phases and helped me get it to this point now. I had hesitated for a long time on posting this due to the intensity of emotion in it, but after seeing the current updates' focus on Dave and his emotional status, I figured it was time to throw this one up.

3 days with Photoshop CS3, and a Cintiq.

Dave, Jade, and Homestuck are copyright Andrew Hussie

Give that man some love for such an amazing epic, please.

EDIT 4/8/11: Thanks to some awesome crit by ~Zenon1293 I've touched up the trolls' lineart and shading a bit. I think they should look a little better consolidated with the overall look of the piece.

I know right? I actually hated Dave at first, mainly because when they first introduced him, he sort of averted from the story that was currently happening. :0 He quickly grew on me, though.

And you explain it perfectly again. So I must agree to your two primary ships! And yeah, when it comes to who fits with who, I'm still trying to figure out whether John and Rose really suite me all that much. I need to see more of them first!

Yeah I'm not entirely sold on John x Rose, but it's certainly possible. Right now I think the current situation can only deepen their friendship, and that's got a redrom possibility down the road.

My problem is they don't seem to quite fit. I've yet to put my finger on it. I think it's probably because John acts from his heart, and Rose from her mind. Which is why it seems Rose might be missing some crucial clues, while John's still sorting it out. (Seems to me he takes his time to sort stuff out, but once he does, watch out!)

Yeah, I understand what you mean. :0 That pretty much describes my perspective on it as well. Maybe John will end up influencing Rose to quit thinking so deeply into things. We'll see!

That would help. A mind that doesn't operate from the heart is going to miss those gut-instinct clues.

Star Wars might be a bit hokey at times, but I think Obi-Wan had a good point about trusting your feelings because that's where your hunches will come from. It wouldn't surprise me if Hussie was aiming for that particular trope...especially given the way Rose went off on Jack in one of the more recent updates... >__>;;;

Ha, I honestly don't know much about Star Wars, but I wouldn't be surprised either. He might even be making the reference by accident, like the Strider brothers with Kamina and Simon.

This is really, really amazing! It's wonderfully drawn and awesome that you can even back up your idea with proof from the comic itself! ^^
I've kinda realized that I don't like Dave as much as I liked Davesprite and his Bro... and at this point I'm just waiting for something like this to happen, for him to actually express emotions in some huge way.
Again, this is awesome!!!

Thanks. Glad you liked it.

And I agree. Dave's a weird mix of likeable and wanting to smack sense into, for me. The way I see it, the side of him we don't like is due to training from Bro to become the badass he knows he's got to become. (I suspect all the guardians knew about their paradox-children's potential, just look at the way John's dad kept dropping hints.) And in some ways we all know training, especially combat training, has that lovely knack for repressing emotions.

I think Dave needs to get in touch with his feelings, be they grief, anger, happiness, whatever. He can't keep bottling them up or they're going to get him sometime when he needs to keep them outta the way. That's the way I see emotions working: Get the sads, the angries, the upsets out safely before they explode out on their own.

You make a good point about Davesprite particularly: he's a future Dave who's had John die on him, and spent enough time fighting on LOHAC to have grown up a good bit. He seemed more willing to look at things as they were rather than through his coolkid filters.

You're welcome! YAY DAVE X JADE!!!

Well... it's just that the comic made you start off thinking dave was just a sweary rapper type of person... which he basically is, but he's quite a lot more. But he's interesting because with repressed emotions comes humongous fireworks when the mask is broken... fireworks that cause pity and pity happens to lead to redrom stuff! XD

But it adds a great deal of suspense with his bottled emotions. You're constantly wondering when they're gonna burst and what it'll cause! ^^

And yet he stayed perfectly calm when talking with Future Rose about John and Jade... I just liked how valiant Davesprite was, first saving John, then Dave, then facing Jack with his Bro. He didn't really show emotions all that much more than Dave, but he seemed to protect and fight more... though then again when he got offended by John calling Dave the "real dave", that may have been a sign that his emotions were showing a slight bit more.

Heh yeah.

But I think that's the same for everyone in there. We thought John was just a loveable dork. Now he's a loveable dork who's the Hero of the Story, is the first kid to go God Tier, and all kinds of stuff.

Rose certainly has taken her road, and Jade seems to be growing from the loss of her dreamself and coping with Jadesprite. I just think it's Dave's turn to have a wakeup moment.

I think with Davesprite, he was genuine to what he knew he needed to do. In that case, his emotions were more easily handled cause they were in line with what he knew he had to do. Dave here seems to not quite get WHAT it is he has to do, and his feelings are all over the map...and he's still bottling them, more or less.
