Description Okay. I've decided I might as well post this one anyways.

If someone finds this offensive, I can sort of understand, but I have to admit whoever would be offended by this might've set themselves up for it. So I'm of two minds about it.

My character's dialogue here pretty much sums up what this is about - it's both a commentary about said subject, and basically a humorous poke at said subject as well. I'm amazed at how many times people will cute-ify a character that doesn't really need it. Sometimes it works, like in the "chibi" style. Other times it...it's Squicktown.

Such is my opinion about the 14-year-old loli style personifications of GLaDOS. *shudders* Okay, I get people are into that. I get some even find it adorable, cool, kawaii, whatever. But...this is a psycho homicidal computer who kills people with death traps in test chambers, neurotoxin, and turrets. I"m not even going to finish that thought.

So here is this piece, which I hope makes people laugh and think a little bit. I'm hoping more find it funny than offensive. Though of course GLaDOS wigging out about DAers is probably scary enough for some. >_>

(Mind, I think doing what I drew her doing is a bit overkill, note my character shows that sentiment. The thing is, I can't seem to write a properly passive-aggressive-ish GLaDOS line for crap sometimes, so I didn't bother trying...And G is a bit overkill herself on the topic of killing people who piss her off, so... )

GLaDOS, that poor scared turret over there, and the combustible lemons are copyright to Valve.

But I don't know, I think there can be an air of homicidal psychopathic computer in a cute little girl. *only says this having seen the Red Queen in Resident Evil*

Oh I totally agree. It's just that GLaDOS doesn't read to me as having an avatar that looks like a cute little girl.

And look at the turrets. Totally "homicidal cute little girls"...

Question.
If I draw my GLaDOS in anime style but she isn't "kawaii" (I do draw Miku-GLaDOS sometimes but I'm talking about my own design) or overly fanservice-y and looks more like the more GLaDOS-ish ones, would you count her under the ones you don't like?

I mean I like the cuter ones too but the more GLaDOS-ish ones are better IMO. I pretty much like all GLaDOS human versions except the overly fanservice-y ones, and even then I'll like those if they look cool. And I don't think GLaDOS herself is cute, I think the cute human versions are cute. Unless you count the cores as GLaDOS, in which case the Curiosity Core is absolutely adorable.

also d'awwww turret

DeepChrome In reply to Alkuto [2011-08-30 02:16:47 +0000 UTC]

Anime style as a whole is not kawaaii. I think people forget that 'kawaii" basically means "cute" and generally is just used to describe cutesy anime. So generally I don't think I'd have an issue with your version.

That having been said, I get there's a variance of opinion on what humanizations work for her. I get the impression you might be hanging a bit more onto my words than you need to.

And yes, Curiosity Core is absolutely adorable.

I really don't like these either. GLaDOS, for one, is not a young girl, and for two, she's not cute. She's badass, and not in that "little girl with big hammer" way. In Portal 2, she definitely strikes me as even more mature than Portal 1, in terms of "if she were human what age would she look."

Anyway. Yeah. I agree with you here.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeepChrome In reply to alcoraiden [2011-07-23 19:45:46 +0000 UTC]

Heh, thank you.

You might like the humanizations by *makani , *TwinklePowderySnow and ~Meketaten then, none of them are 14-year-olds, and they're all fairly badass. There's actually a Portal fan community here, and quite a few artists have drawn humanized GLaDOS designs that aren't the slightest bit anime-ish.

You're welcome.

Oh the Miku ones I can stand the least. Just. So. Very. Wrong.

And you know, it might be saying something (probably several somethings) about those people if they can't come up with an original way to alter GLaDOS other than tweaking an image of Miku. I could go further but I'm just not that evilly sarcastic or passive-aggressive in my word choices.

I've long thought I'm not passive-aggressive, but I think what it is, I just needed the right medium to be such through...and I guess art is it.

Also I had the most hilarious notion while halfway through a peanut-butter fudge sundae today: that Wheatley is responsible for the Miku recolor interpretations of GLaDOS in an attempt to make her less scary for him to cope with.

Now I'm gonna have to draw that.

XD I don't mind the cutesy look, but I'm really getting tired of the 3D Hatsune Miku recolors. I like Miku, but the recolors feel like a lazy personification. Miku's model was already made, and people are taking credit for something they didn't put the effort in to, just dumped into that vocaloid specific(?) 3d editor and tweaked a little. And now there's all these spin-off fanart of the Miku!GLaDOS. *twitches*

I'm more impressed with the artists who actually take the effort into making an original GLaDOS personification. I've seen some good 3D models (some cutesy, some not) and some awesome cutesy art.

(I think that a chibi/young GLaDOS would look more like Wednesday Adams. That pale, creepy child look. (Now I want to draw that. Crap.))

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeepChrome In reply to Kyuohki [2011-07-13 21:18:16 +0000 UTC]

I loved Wednesday Addams from the movies. She was probably my favorite Addams next to Morticia. I would totally <3 to see that. It'd be a really interesting take on young!GLaDOS.

As for cute!GLaDOS, if it can be done convincingly and humorously, I'm all for it. But the Miku recolors...uuuugggh. I already threw out a fairly sarcastic remark on the subject in a reply to another person on this piece, you might get a laugh out of it?

I've only see mostly 2D personifications of GLaDOS - would you be up for linking me some of the stuff that actually isn't a horrific Miku recolor or some such? I'm curious, and I like quite a few GLaDOS personifications on DA. Just...none of the 14-year-old loli stuff. *shudders* That and the Miku recolors are what prompted me to make this.

I can't actually find any now. D: They were on devArt, but now they are either buried under all the other art, or the creators' pulled them. I'll keep looking for them, though, and shoot you some links if I manage to run across them again.

I'll eventually draw that child GLaDOS, once I stop getting distracted by the Assassin's Creed Tumblr crack. (All my art and writing are neglected and suffering b/c I keep running over to refresh my dashboard! T_T)

Heh, addictions.

Sorry you couldn't find any. I'm still curious, but I understand if you're having trouble.

As for younger GLaDOS, one idea I had a while back was that the turrets' little-kid voices were originally GLaDOS' old voice files from her childhood. Make of that what you will.

I really like her hair, what is your drawing process? (e.g. entirely computerized, penciled, inked, scanned in and edited, or perhaps not computerized at all.) If you do use a computer, may I know the program? Gimp isn't cutting it, I can't shade well with it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

DeepChrome In reply to daydreemar [2011-07-13 05:52:09 +0000 UTC]

Entirely computerized, but I grew up drawing with markers on computer print-out paper, then to the Magna-Doodles, then on to a proper pencil-and-paper sketchbook.

Now it's all digital. I started out with an old Aiptek tablet with line wobble issue with its pen that drove me bonkers for 2 years, then to a trustworthy Wacom Intuos 6x8, which I've had for about 5 years.

My current toy is one I saved up a fair amount of cash for: a 21-inch Wacom Cintiq. I <3 that thing.

I use Photoshop CS3. There's several versions of the program out there, for trial uses. You could play around with those and see if you like it.

There's also Corel Painter, which I know nothing about. There's also a low-cost/free one called paint.net which some people use that you might find to your tastes.

I've played with GIMP a little. It puts me into a rather nasty mood after a while. >_< Very little tablet support. Among other issues. GrrrRRrrr.

Anyways, how I work, basically is just draw the doodle/lineart first. Clean it up, make the lines nicer. Then set another layer above, usually to "Multiply" so the lines stay crisp under the coloring, and shade. Sometimes I can have a few shading layers for different effects.

But that's the gist of it.

And YES the hair was totally my favorite part to do on this.

👍: 0 ⏩: 2

DeepChrome In reply to DeepChrome [2011-07-13 06:08:19 +0000 UTC]

One of the great things about Photoshop is that there are several ways to accomplish something in it.

It's also one of the programs you can learn just by putzing around, opening menus, experimenting, and generally being a mad artistic scientist. I basically learned Photoshop that way, over a couple of years. It's got probably the best tablet support, and some really nice brush-tweaking options as well.

There's a number of features that you'll enjoy, including the Blending Modes: I use Overlay, Linear Dodge, and Mulitply the most. GIMP I think has something like Overlay, but you might find Photoshop's more to your liking.

I think DA's got a fair number of Photoshop tutorials for various skill ranges, hope that helps?

daydreemar In reply to DeepChrome [2011-07-13 06:13:35 +0000 UTC]

It might help, I'm sure I'll love it, when you put it that way. I don't have a tablet and don't really plan on getting one, not only can I not afford one because I'm only sixteen, but I like drawing with pencil and ink, and then editing the hard copy by scanning it in. It feels more real, it's just aesthetics I guess. Thank you, by the way, I know I'll love the program and I appreciate it.
