Description
WARNING! May contain spoilers about Dragon Age Origins!***********************************************
So finally the first two pages of my promised Dragon Age comic are finished.
Hero of this comic is Jolanda Cousland, who is one of my favorite playing characters in the game.
Yeah and that battle shout of Sten is qunari language: Ataash qunari! – "Glory to the qunari!"
Heh, my first ever drawn genlocks make their appearance in this one.
Enjoy the comic.

No mercy can be expected so it is truly a battle to the death.
Yep, I wanted to make that "introducing" frame to be somewhat more impressive and thought that this angle would be different and would show the difference between Jolanda and ogre more strikingly. I myself was very impressed when I first time encountered an ogre in the game and wanted to bring that same feeling to this. And I am very glad to hear that you think that I have succeeded in that.
Next pages will be pure fighting. Hopefully I can manage to make the battle and their movement to look and feel "natural". It is quite a challenge to me so let's see...

I think that its head ram and grapping attacks are most deadly ones. Let's hope that Jolanda can avoid those...

That's what indomitable is for. It looks really funny when your character just slides backwards in front of the ram attack

DeepWoodian In reply to victricia [2010-11-17 13:34:38 +0000 UTC]
True, indomitable is very handy when it comes to enduring ogres ram attacks. Without it you barely get to stand up before ogre usually rams you again, and again. Of course even with indomitable you still take the damage but you are not knocked down from your feet.
But in the name of "reality" I won't use indomitable in this comic. If a force like that would really hit a character, there is no way a human could block or parry it. So if that happens in my comic I will show the true outcome.

I actually had an idea of what it might actually look like - another question altogether is whether it's realistic at all. But then, all those magical talents aren't all that realistic either

No, tietysti on vähän hassua puhua realistisuudesta samaan aikaan Dragon Agen kanssa.
Dramaattisuus on toki tärkeä elementti.

Always nice to hear such kind words from a fellow DA artists.
As I mentioned earlier to someone else, this comic is going to be a practice for me so that I could "unlock" the secrets of portraying movement and combat. I think I will have quite challenging scenes ahead but that's the way how we learn.

Great storytelling here. Also gret perspective on the last panel. It relly gives the viewer the impression of "large vs. small". Let's just hope that Jolanda is up for the challenge despite noone's able to help her out on this one. Again nice detailing on everybody's clothing and armour. You do hese things so well.

DeepWoodian In reply to Loulin [2010-11-11 12:19:35 +0000 UTC]
We will see how it turns out for Jolanda. She has her doubts even if she is a skilled warrior with templar abilities.
I made the last panel to be somewhat different as I wanted to bring forth threat, danger and massive strenght and size.
Well, clothing is usually my "Achilles heel". In this case I had reference for Morrigans clothes so it was not so hard. On the other hand if I have to design clothes myself... Waaaaagghh!

yikes, I usually fight an ogre by distracting it while a range companion attacks him from afar

As I usually play with warrior character (like Jolanda here) I take them head on. Of course I too take often Morrigan along to backup me with her handy spells.
But ogre can be quite tough opponent to melee warriors, especially at the lower levels and harder difficulties.

My mind is reeling over your armor skills. And the forced perspective on the ogre is just righteous.
I always wondered who's job it was to put the loincloths on the ogres... it seems like the task set aside for the genlock who ticks off the supervisor.

DeepWoodian In reply to Enemy-Ghost [2010-11-11 12:05:56 +0000 UTC]
The skill has come with practise. But I admit that I have always enjoyed to draw armors, especially scale-, chain- and plate mails. Bioware really "hit the spot" with their Dragon Age armor designs from my point of view and I especially like the templar armor design.
I wanted to achieve something "special" with the first frame with ogre. Therefore I used that perspective.
You think ogres need "assistants" to dress themselves?
And that would be quite bad punishment indeed.

Wow! Absolutely great artwork. Also your drawing is a bit unfair to your hero: The Ogre seems to be A LOT bigger than the ones in DAO.

DeepWoodian In reply to NeroonCousland [2010-11-11 00:38:34 +0000 UTC]
Thank you. It is very pleasant to hear that the hours (and days) spent to this are worth of the effort.
Yes, the ogre does look like a bit (a lot?) bigger but these are my points why it is so:
1. The angle. We see the situation behind the ogre (actually through it legs ), so it is naturally closer to us than Jolanda. This makes it look bigger. Add to this that Jolanda is also some meters away from the ogre. Again the angle makes it look like she would be closer.
2. Jolanda's pose is crouched because of the sword swing and therefore she is not in her full lenght.
3. Ogre is standing straight. During game (when battling it) it is usually crouched to different fighting poses.
4. The last one is that I wanted to make this view point so that we would look the situation through ogres legs.

DeepWoodian In reply to victricia [2010-11-10 23:59:41 +0000 UTC]
Well, I don't know can I yet go above the "legality of the epicness"

Well, I also used much more time and effort for these two pages than usually. No wonder it took some time to finish these. But I must say that I like Morrigan's and Sten's appearances here and am quite satisfied to their looks. (Alistair is only showing his back side so... )
One big goal of mine is to practice movement, action and battle poses with this comic.
Again, it's good to notice that you like.
