Description I was actually looking through jumping stock when I found this reference, and I fell in love with it. I mean, just look at it. I think anyone who rides secretly wishes they had a horse like this - unless you do, in which case you are very lucky.
This is a 9x12 drawn with HB - 8B pencils. My ref: [link]
On another note - one of my Christmas presents was a couple of Staedtler 8B pencils. Those things get the BLACKEST BLACK a pencil could ever produce; it's like charcoal without the mess! If you're looking for some dramatic blacks, that's the pencil for the job.

Hi: I like all of your drawings. To be able to draw horses and riders as well as you do shows you  have an exceptional talent for drawing. You obviously love to draw. Cheers.

Gah that is a beautiful horse. I love dappled greys, so I'm not biased at all! Kudos on having the patience to render all those dapples, I know they're the bane of some people's existence. I assume the nice dark shades in this pic are evidence of your shiny new 8B pencils? Really like the way you've captured this guy, he looks like he's moving forwards with lots of energy but still soft and rounded, and for some reason, I really love the way you've detailed the waves in his tail

Define-X In reply to Finnisterre [2013-01-10 03:14:07 +0000 UTC]

I know, right?? I fell in love as soon as I saw him. Speaking of love, yes, I used those pencils - they're amazing. That's what I felt like before I tried it - about the dapples, I mean. For me, it's not really that bad, and I guess that one of the nice things about being a realist; I just have to follow what the picture does and not worry about what I think it should look like, because if it looks like the picture, it will look right.

Finnisterre In reply to Define-X [2013-01-11 07:48:57 +0000 UTC]

He's fantastic. One day, I tell myself, one day I'll have such a stunning horse But good pencils and decent paper will do in the meantime Must be nice to actually follow the image; I'll have to try to persuade me to reveal your secret sometime, cos I tend to get distracted and start doing my own thing. (Patience? What's that?)

So, feel like making any more dappled horses any time soon, or did you get your fill of shading itty bitty patches for now?

Define-X In reply to Finnisterre [2013-01-12 04:55:36 +0000 UTC]

Haha - Yep, I suppose this'll have to do for now. I think I'm just too afraid to try my own thing; everything looks better when I follow a picture, and I've learned not to try anything crazy.
Whoof... who knows? If I see another pic of one that makes my jaw drop, then I don't think I'll be able to resist.

Finally my favourite pencil-horse artist is back How do oyu keep the contrast my camera kills everything and also during the work my paper usually gets grey of the dust and stuff

Define-X In reply to ColouredArt [2013-01-06 03:34:38 +0000 UTC]

Aw, you are the sweetest! I use a scanner, and even then I think the pencil lead reflects or something weird like that, so I edit it in ACDSEE to get it back to where it should be.

ColouredArt In reply to Define-X [2013-01-06 18:29:01 +0000 UTC]

welcome I see Have no scanner camera does the job usually but when you live where I live and it's dark at 4 and the sun isn't really showing during the winter I can't get that good light that I need. The program you talk about Is it free? I'll have to google it

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Define-X In reply to ColouredArt [2013-01-07 03:20:59 +0000 UTC]

Oh yeah - it's winter where I live too, and it gets dark so early! I have to go riding really early so I don't get caught out after dark.
ACDSEE isn't free (unfortunetly), but it isn't too expensive and is absolutely fantastic. But there are lots of free programs online; I'm sure it wouldn't be too hard to find a good one for what you need.
