The first one simply looks like a bunch of photograps thrown together and then cut using the lasso tool to make it look like hills, and there is no illusion of depth, the second one is better as there is more suggestion of depth, but the background looks a bit too smudgy for me.

Hmm I see what yer saying, I got way too focused on rocks and not atmosphere/depth. 
For the second, I wanted it to look misty/foggy and I had also ran outta time.
So spacing out my focus seems to be my issue overall. :/

Any other suggestions?

I'm not that much of a "brush" painter, and even then I commit similar mistakes Guess keep making these and improving I suppose. There are a couple of tutorials I know that you might enjoy though! www.youtube.com/watch?v=NygkJE… (there is also a part 0 that is not required to be watched but might also help). enjoy
