I really want to be better at landscapes! I lack the imagination to come up with my own scenes so these are some practice studies from reference pics. I don't really know what I am doing and I'm not really happy with any of these. The field in the top right is the oldest, then the rocky one, then the big icy lake one.Related content

the way you painted the water with that kinda "chalk" brush give to it a wonderful effect, the field has a charming colour varieties and the rocky one is gorgeous omg. that lighting Β and shadows are amazing!

A bit of both really! But I am hoping the more reference studies I do, the easier it will become to create landscapes from my imagination instead. The brain needs information to call on!

Hehehe. True, the brain needs information to call on. But I bet you have plenty already. The question is, how can you improve creating from imagination? You can only do this by doing it! Let the imagination lead the pencil... and be surprised by what will turn up. Creating from reference has nothing to do with this action... even though the nice result 
The imagination is something powerful when you let it be the source of creation. It's the skill of creator Gods...

I like how you've managed to suggest so much with so few strokes in the left image. The outlines of trees and the look of the cold lake are clearly comprehensible, and there's even the suggestion of reflections on the water.
