Description
Is this what one would call "Fan Art"?Painted in PhotoshopCS2 with a teeny Wacom tablet. (Gemma, if you read this and think Hook looks somewhat like Big John, well ...
The reason behind this came from my having recently tracked down a 1984 copy of "Peter Pan and Wendy" that I'd had as a child, but was accidentally thrown out when I was about 10 yrs old: [link] I was devastated, as the illustrations were absolutely beautiful, and I've spent the last 18 yrs trying to find it again. (
Anyway, at first I imitated the artwork, homaging the front cover design etc, but ... well a) it wasn't my style, and b) I think the original artist is just so good and I love him to pieces, that whatever I attempted turned out crappy in comparison. I don't think I would've been happy with anything I did, so in the end I gave up and decided to do my own arty/illustrationy pictures in my own way. Hence this.
Now, I know my painting skills (digital or otherwise) are not brilliant and the faces look waxy and don't get me started on Jas. Hook's hair! But it's been a while since I've done any artwork, so this is the best I can do at the moment. I'm hoping to do lots more in different ways, not just Peter Pan, but my other obsessions too. I think Peter Pan was my first ... later followed by other band wagons such as Star Wars, Lord of the Rings, Harry Potter, Percy Jackson, Doctor Who etc. I figured it's like giving myself a mini project to do, seeing as I've struggled to draw for myself lately.

I like the shades and the colors, digital painting usually look simillar I think but your way of shading is really specific.. I hate the manga eyes ^^ But it's a cool picture.. So would you recommend the graphic pen? I never worked with it.. how long did it take you to get used to using it?

My shading is probably so specific because I'm retardedly anal! I'd love to be looser with my paintings/drawings - digital or otherwise - but it really doesn't come naturally for me.
Using a tablet/graphic pen, rather than a mouse, is far, far better because you can get the feel of the strokes. It's pretty much just like using a normal pen - or paintbrush - so you have far more control about where the lines go. Didn't take too long to get used to.

I think so too... I must get it and try to practice if there's any hope of making any actual money with art, it's probably in digital painting and stuff..

I agree - but isn't it annoying that traditional art is getting pushed out?
I sometimes make a little pledge to myself that I'm never going to do a digital painting again because I never really like the end result - not in any artistic way. It just comes out too ... mainsteam? Dull? Lifeless?
... but then, that's probably just because I can't loosen up the style.

I think it will always be around more or less.. you should do digital painting, you are very good at them.. i think your sensitivity will shine through in any art you do.. you should really do it.. Do I flatter people too much? I sometimes think I do.. I really mean it, I just have a nice opinion of most people I hang out with, I just ignore the ones I don't like.. hmm

It's certainly a good philosophy, but when boiled down to basics, you're essentially telling me that you don't hang put with people you don't like. If you did, I would definitely worry.
You know me, though, I'll never totally give up on Digi painting. It's to easy to get an immediate effect/atmosphere - especially for someone like me who's never mastered actual painting. With Digital I can always erase whatever I've done and no one will know! It's the perfect crime!

Yes, I think there's so much to learn in digital painting, and it has so many advantages, cheap, being able to advance quickly on a painting... we really should practice more of it..

Definitely - I've got some "paintings" lined up ... along with a bunch of other stuff, of course. (As usual, I procrastinate as often as I breathe.)
But right now I've been sketching more than anything because my drawing hand is so rusty. It's been too long since I sat down and drew something, so I'm completely out of practice. Essentially I'm just doing sketches to get back into the rhythm - hand exercises etc. Might put them all in a sketch-dump later - but I'm not promising anything. I always say I'll have new art up soon and soon never comes, so it'll come when it comes.
So there.

Us procrastinators of the world need to unite one of these days.. when we get around to it... I feel I need to sketch much more too.. tooo little time always...

I love the elfin style of Peter, not entirely human and not entirely faery. Hook looks excellent, just as you would imagine him, yes he does resemble Jon but only slightly, more like Jon looks like Hook!
Did you find the painting dififcult, cos it looks superb, lovely lighting and soft colours. Peters eyes draw you in...somebody's a fan of the dodge tool!!

PS - someone told me after they ed this that Hook apparantly was only about 27 years old!
Can you believe that? I've no idea how they knew that, because I don't think it was ever mentioned in the story. Peter always refers to him as "Old", but then anyone over 15 is old in his eyes. Still, I never knew that.

God I hate that lol, when i used to play videogames the characters were always older than me but now that ain't happening! Hook is 27? Tell that to Dustin Hoffman!
Also a cool trick for you, don't worry about blending everything, if that is what feels natural then go for it, once your image is complete and you've flattened your layers etc, use the 'add noise' filter and go to edit to adjust it to how strong you want. It's an easy method of adding texture to the pic and makes your skin look far more realistic!

Well, lets take Dustin Hoffman under the belief that without Pan in Neverland, everything/one ages - like Pan himself when he left ... that sound plausible?
I don't know if digital painting will ever feel natural for me, but I'll have a go next time - though it prolly won't be for while. I want to get back to just drawing, or at least adding texture layers

Well, Hook was here first, I guess
I always view Peter as a bit Elfish because in the story it was never clear exactly where he came from, or who he was. Yes, he thinks he remembers a mother, but even in the story it says he might have got it wrong because his memory sucks! So, as a representitive of children everywhere, I thought he should be a little impish.
I did find the painting difficult - I always do. I can't break the habit of wanting to smooth over everything and blend it together, so I sometimes think everything turns out a but waxy. But I am indeed heartily fond of Dodge! They just make eyes sparkle!
