Description
WARNING::Very Large ImageD/L for full size.
From Left to right:
Adventure: Yorgle
Adventure for the atari 2600 is considered to be the first adventure game ever made, (Aptly named too.) The character pictured is the Yorgle, or the yellow dragon, which is the easiest of 3 different kinds of dragon. The reason there's a cube in his stomach is because the main character in the game was represented by a square, due to crude graphics.
Shadow of the Beast: Aarbron
A legendary game made for the Amiga computer by Psygnosis back in 1989. The graphics were large and very detailed for the time. You played Aarbron, a man under a curse that turned him into the "Beast Messenger."
Karnov: Karnov
Karnov is a platformer game made by Data East in 1987. You play as Karnov, an Ex-circus strongman from Eastern Russia, searching for treasure.
Baraduke Toby Masuyo and friend
Baraduke is one of Namco's lesser known titles. It was a scrolling shooter made in 1985. You play as a spaceman in a cybersuit, and you try to exterminate the "Octies." In the ending of the game, you find out that the hero is actually a woman. Now doesn't that sound familiar? Baraduke actually came out a year before metroid did. So does that mean Samus is a rip-off or is it a coincidence?

Is it weird that I immediately knew who all the characters were before looking at the description? Also a testament to the great artist, I think.
Love this picture.

Ha, not at all! Obscure game characters deserve love too!
Thanks so much, I appreciate it!

The inclusion of the Baraduke astronaut is a stroke of brilliance. It's a pity the game was so difficult; had it not been, or maybe had it been ported to Famicom, she would have gotten more recognition, maybe.
Between the Astronaut, Ki from Tower of Druaga, and Valkyrie from Legend of Valkyrie, it's pretty safe to say that Namco was way ahead in the depiction of women as brave, capable heroes (in really fun games, to boot!) Samus was a welcome addition to the roster, and the best recognized, but she wasn't first. : )

Thanks again! I've only played it a handful of times, but yeah, adverse difficulty was also just a staple from that era.
For sure! Namco's certainly got an iconic roster of characters!

Yeah, I seem to remember that. Wasn't he in a fighting game where they did that to him?

Karnov is great, haven't played it in quite a while now. And yeah, Capcom's GnG series is among my favorites. Both Karnov and GnG were very challenging, which I really appreciate.

I still love the GnG series, though the original will still always hold a place in my heart it was probably my favorite NES title I owned.

I'm currently in a Pathfinder game (table top role-playing) and the DM made a modified template so I can play Aarbron as a character. So Cool!

It is, though I have to take orders from another character (the DM created 'The Shaper Mages' in an earlier campaign, so that's what we're going with), but it's still really cool. The role-playing possibilities are pretty open with that.

Hehe, Karnov. The music played when you die in the game paired with the animation is pure win. I've yet to play a game with a funnier one.

Random bit of Trivia I just found out. Toby Masuyo was actually married to Dig Dug, and had a kid with him before they divorced... the kid?
Mr. Driller.
Now how trippy is that. That's true Namco Canon for ya.

Haha, Yorgle swallowing the cube is great (it seems a bit funny that they could manage to make him look more or less like a serpent but had to settle for a square for the hero, though). Go Square! We're all counting on you!
Nicely detailed.
