Description
The Clan Gregor is believed to have originated in Scotland during the 9th century. The MacGregors suggest that they take their name from Gregor (derived from the Latin 'Gregorius' and the Late-Greek 'Gregorios' which means "Alert, Watchful, or Vigilant"). Gregor is said to be a son of the Scottish king Alpin II Mac Eochaidh and younger brother of Kenneth MacAlpin, the now famous Scottish king who first united Scotland in A.D. 843. Alpin II was the son of Eochaidh VI 'the Poisonous,' High King of Scots, by his marriage to his cousin, the Pictish Princess Royal, and thus had claims to the Scottish and Pictish CrownsRelated content

That's a little different then I have heard from The Clan Society and what I have read. Or perhaps I have misunderstood who's son Gregor was. I was thinking he was one of King Kenneth MacAplin's sons.
I personally love the Clan's secondary motto. "E'en Do Bait Spair Nocht."
Of course I am still in Learning mode. I have only been a member of the society for 5 years.

It's hard to say with any definitiveness but, most of the old text I've read lead me to believe this is the case. The man you speak of is son of AlpΓn. He was killed in Galloway, after he had entirely destroyed and devastated it. And then the kingdom of the Scots was transferred to the kingdom of the Picts. It's an exciting tale. It's not mentioned in all of the ancient texts but, it is in some of them.
That's a great motto as well : ) It's great to hear that you enjoy learning about it as well. I hope you've been brushing up on your Gaelic!

Gaelic slowly but surely. It's just hard to find. I don't read well enough to learn without hearing it. But I can't find an audio. And Irish Gaelic isn't the same as Scots Gaelic.

Thank you! I appreciate the kind words. I have MacGregor Heritage and I love to read the history. Such brutal things have happened to the Clan that, I can't help but be amazed that I'm here. This is my Sgian dubh, it's from Scotland. It has the MacGregor crest on the handle. It reads; "Royal is my race".
