The old 1.0 design. I'd been hoping to have hammered out every last detail before I started posting the character, but meh, it never seems to work out that way. Biggest thing was his mane had a "flat" look to it and didn't cover his neck. It took a little time to get used to the new design, as he was like this for quite awhile.

Long story short:
Rather unceremoniously. He's not really a pony, so the talents that contributed to it were realized a long time ago. He was recounting to Twilight what he considered to be the most influential part of his life and the emotional state caused it to appear.
