Description A quick concept sketch of a chronodweller, a species of shapeshifters borne from the vacuum of space, or maybe they originated from a gaseous planet far, far from the galactic center, or maybe they're bits of sentient space-time, granted life and knowing by the enigmatic Behemoths.

I DON'T KNOW.

I'm trying to get my ideas down faster, letting the image sort of paint itself. I still feel very weak in regards to colours but hopefully one day I'll be semi good at them.

But anyway. c:

And yes, it does have seven fingers per hand: five fingers, two opposable thumbs. All the better to grab things with! : D

Lookin good Dawne!

I'm digging how you're shaping everything, I can see how you're going about it in the more unfinished areas toward the bottom. I really think you've got a great direction going, but may I suggest one thing? Go way, way darker. Blocking out in black and going to highlights can do wonders for that pop!

That is a very interesting creature. I also find it interesting how detailed the head shoulders and torso are, but then it gets a bit more vague around the legs and hands. I do the same thing. Either I get bored/frustrated with it, or I am working on a harder part of the picture and can't quite motivate myself past general forms!

I was having such a blast with the head, then I got to the hands, and my brain shut off. I left the computer for most of the day, came back, opened the file, and still had no will to draw those damn hands. So I left it as is. Funny how that works.

chrono dictates time. does it time travel / control time in some way? It's a freaky but cool design! Something about those dangling foothands. lol

Delta-Hexagon In reply to Aldark [2011-12-06 17:06:06 +0000 UTC]

It does. The chronodwellers, though few and far between, are known among the more advanced species across the galaxy as masters of reality, even though the term 'master' is going pretty far. They can manipulate the fabric of space-time to small extent, mostly around their immediate forms, which allows them to shapeshift and hope dimensions and time. So a chronodweller can be anywhere and anytime it wants, whenever it wants.

They're also known by the less advanced species of the galaxy as time ghosts, mostly because, in their constant pursuit of knowledge, they'll take on the forms of whatever sentient life they're watching and flicker in and out of local space-time like ghosts caught in a loop. They don't care, but it tends to give whoever catches sight of once quite a scare.

See this I like. I dig the design, and I love how you've used the blocking technique. If suggest trying to go darker in areas and out more gradient work into it, use the low opacity to blend stuff together more.

You're getting good! Btw, just got my desktop back, going to be drawing a lot more! Maybe we can help eachother learn!

The ridges remind me of an insectoid creature and the pockets of light on the head look like big, soulful, intelligent eyes. The way the legs are shaped strikes me in an odd way, but in another It only makes the figure look more kindly. While this might not be the image you ment to portray, I love how the design is simultaniously ferocious looking and heartwarmingly loving. I want to meet one someday.

It is. I was trying to achieve an alien form that at the same time appears intelligent and kind while still looking regal, in a way. So I am very glad you caught on to that. I'm sure a chronodweller would like to meet you one day, too, if it could get past its shyness. c:

his hands and feet kind of got a guild-steersman vibe, especially from the blue one Barlowe painted for his Guide to Science fiction.
You say it's a shapeshifter, so that's why I can see a creature built for microgravity looking so humanoid (it changed appearance when contacted by us), but i think that a creature who moves around in space would have more of a shape that is built around some sort of propulsion organ, because flapping around in the void isn't going to get you anywhere.

Oh mai, I was just looking at that book last night. One of my favourite books, by far. It probably influenced me without realizing it, because looking at it now, those hands look pretty similar.

Well, it doesn't move via flapping, considering there's nothing for said wings to grab. The flaps of skin between the arms and such don't have any correlation to movement, I just sort of thought they looked cool. But now that you mention it the pesky thing really isn't getting anywhere like that. I probably need to rethink its origins some more. To tell the truth I was kind of torn between living in the void and originating from a gaseous planet. Perhaps the void isn't the best idea...

Hmm, more things to think about... But that's where the fun lies.

I can see the current drawing as a model of the organism while it spends time in high earth orbit. Be glad you wrote hims as a low gravity creature, because certain fluctuations of gravity could wreck havoc on it's organs. I have a sort of idea you could use, instead of hands, it's arms could be something like solar-sail wings that collect bits of interstellar hydrogen, and then it has some sort of rocketbutt that takes the hydrogen, adds it to a built in fission/fusion/idk generator, and expels the gas for movement.
Although chronodweller implies some sort of connection to time itself, I can see it's implications that a creature that lives in space will need an incredibly long lifespan in order to get anywhere, and is basically immortal (which makes sense because it's a shapeshifter). Depending on how social or intelligent these creatures are, they should be able to communicate via laser or something else that's useful for talking while incredibly far apart.

Well the term chronodweller comes from their ability to manipulate the fabric of space-time to an extent. In the mythos that only really exists inside my own head, there's four big main species that inhabit the universe and the chronodwellers are one of them. They're highly intelligent, but due to a horrible event that happened thousands of years ago where they were almost driven to complete extinction, they're much more spread out. Which is fine, because they're not very social creatures when it comes to their own kind, anyhow. They much prefer to watch other species and learn. So they're sort of like librarians in my stories, chronicling all that they can in their ridiculously long lives solely because they can and they're driven by a relentless curiousity.

This right here. This is the best thing I have ever read. Rocketbutt.
Sounds positively awesome, though. I already have an image forming in my head but it needs some tweaking for sure.
