Star Swirl the Bearded teaches his faithful student Clover the Clever about the horrors known only as Windegos!This took me about 18 hours and 100 layers to complete and BOY did PS7 not like me for having that many layers! I had to buckle and merge some just to make it stop chugging so hard. XD
Star Swirl is older in this image than my other one and has a grey beard now. I wanted him to look much older (and give him all his bells) so that Clover would look far younger in comparison.
I made Clover male - I thought a sort of ever-patient advisor for the prissy unicorn princess would have some impact as a male. Not to mention there's just not nearly enough strong male characters in MLP!
Clover's design is inspired by three ponies: G1 Clover (a pink mare with blue hair), G2 Clever Clover (a blue stallion with mint/purple/blue hair) and Twilight Sparkle herself. In general, I didn't want him to look EXACTLY like Clever Clover because Star Swirl is very blue on his own, so I lifted the color from Clever Clover/Clover's cutie marks (which are mint-colored) - and as I was working out his hair, I made it pink-striped on a whim and realized that made him look a little like Twilight. XD So I kept it. (He also looks like a popple. <3)
If there's interest, I can also turn OFF the Windegos so you can take a look at the characters and background in more detail.

Well, the real key is that when you spell it "Windego", you don't get any images of WENDIGO. So...yeah.
And considering they literally devour love until ponies are ready to go to war, I'd say that it's pretty apt, regardless.
Sometimes creative license works. I mean, look at characters like "HIM" from Powerpuff girls. That's literally Satan. I mean...yeah. sometimes creators draw from creepy sources.

I'm actually a Satanist so it's not exactly a good idea to depict Satan as a bad guy because when think about he wasn't really that bad but I get the idea

I really love how you drew the windigos, so magestic! I also really like how combined the aesthetics from ponies of previous generations (as well as Twilight) to recreate Clover the Clever.

I always pictured Clover as a mare instead of a stallion.
Basically because Clover was played by Twilight during the play. And some of the actors of that play were mares and other stallions. So if they had actors of both genders, why not have a stallion play Clover instead of Twilight?
Then again, Equestrian plays may work like the old Sheaksperean theathers, where gender didn't matter in what role you got, but how good you were as an actor. (And yes, that means that in the old days, Romeo and Juliet was interpreted by two dudes.)

I figured with 6 main characters and Twilight having 5 friends Princess Celestia had them do the play and genders be damned. Sort of like how the wise 'men' in my nativity plays as a child were always girls. XD I also have considered that Puddinghead may have been a guy too. The rest girls.

That's just my assertion. But it seems likely even if he was a G2 pony and not a G1 (which are the ones that Faust and I both dealt with back in the day, lol)

Is Starswirl's mane really white, or was it pink when he was young and now is white because he's old?

In my version of Starswirl, yes, his hair is only white when he is older. But people seem to like him with pink hair. X3

Besides, it does fit better like this in my head canon, in which Starswirl did teach magic to Clover the Clever, but during the events of the first Hearts Warming Eve he was already dead. Why do I think that? Well, simple: If he wasn't dead, then why wasn't he the one that identified the Windegos when everypony was freezing at the cave? Because he was dead, and Clover the Clever was the one that was carrying his legacy of magical knowledge.

Or he was already turned into Discord. I like the fanon that says that's who Discord is.

Really? I actually heard of that fanon theory, but I don't really like it that much, on the grounds of this: If the Elements of Harmony can turn Nightmare Moon back into Princess Luna, then why can't they turn Discord back to Starswirl?

I think it has something to do with Discord/Starswirl's final spell - the one he was working on creating, but failed to fix. It clearly gave him at least the power to mess with cutiemarks (which could be put out as 'change fate'). And instead of becoming an alicorn by reversing that spell, he furthered that spell to attempt to give himself power over all of destiny - but it backfired and turned him into a dracoequus instead - giving him unlimited power, but also driving him mad. The elements couldn't fix him, only incarcerate him. That's the reason why Celestia may have needed Discord's help - to find out what went wrong and find a way to reverse it, so that Discord could one day go back to normal.
Of course, that's just fanon and a story that's been itching to be written down in my headcanon, but I could see it happening. If anything just to bring Discord back again. X3
Nightmare Moon is just Luna's bad side as far as we know, and certainly, it happened to her after she became a Princess.

No pronouns were used in reference to Clover the Clever during the ep. I got the idea to have him be a stallion when I looked up the toy - in G2 the only "Clover" is actually "Clever Clover" and male!

Star Swirl and Clover's expressions are very fitting, and the coloring of the Windigos is spot-on. They remind me of Dumbledore and Harry Potter here.

There's actually a Harry Potter reference in Star Swirl's name, if you pay close enough attention to Twilight's monologue; he's a bearded magician, right? And one of his most famous spells was the "amniomorphic" - Greek for "jar/pot-making" - one. So, since beards are made out of hair, and one of his crowning achievements was something along the lines of using magic to make pots (at least if you take the spell's name literally), you could say he was a "hairy potter".
...this particular image of him and Clover reminds me of the scene in Prisoner of Azkaban where Lupin is teaching Harry how to create a Patronus.

This is certainly an extraordinary image. Star Swirl the bearded evokes the wise old pony wizard persona here! Reminds me of Gandalf. His young pony apprentice could probably make a good Frodo Baggins.
