Star Swirl the Bearded teaches his faithful student Clover the Clever about the horrors known only as Windegos!This took me about 18 hours and 100 layers to complete and BOY did PS7 not like me for having that many layers! I had to buckle and merge some just to make it stop chugging so hard. XD
Star Swirl is older in this image than my other one and has a grey beard now. I wanted him to look much older (and give him all his bells) so that Clover would look far younger in comparison.
I made Clover male - I thought a sort of ever-patient advisor for the prissy unicorn princess would have some impact as a male. Not to mention there's just not nearly enough strong male characters in MLP!
Clover's design is inspired by three ponies: G1 Clover (a pink mare with blue hair), G2 Clever Clover (a blue stallion with mint/purple/blue hair) and Twilight Sparkle herself. In general, I didn't want him to look EXACTLY like Clever Clover because Star Swirl is very blue on his own, so I lifted the color from Clever Clover/Clover's cutie marks (which are mint-colored) - and as I was working out his hair, I made it pink-striped on a whim and realized that made him look a little like Twilight. XD So I kept it. (He also looks like a popple. <3)

Even though I see all the characters in Hearth Warming's eve as Female, I still imagine them as male just for fun XD (I have two separate headcanons in my own head??)

I like the details you put in it. Also the idea of the windigos being already known in the past when Star Swirl lived. He looks wise and powerful that way. Clover being male? Why not? He looks good and original even if inspired by other ponies.
Turning the windogos off would remove the magic in this work, in my opinion. Nice work.

Well, we know that Star Swirl is male - and from how Clover is treated (as a steed and as Platinum's personal whipping boy) it just sort of struck me he'd fit into the universe that way.

Teacher/student being the same genders leads to slightly less "ZOMG THEY IS A COUPLE!" speculation too.

And really? Ha, EQD comments are weird. 
Maybe Star Swirl could have been a girl pretending to be a guy but given Equestria's a matriarchy that'd be like a guy in Western society dressing up as a woman to be taken seriously in academic circles.
So yeah, I figure it's more likely that Star Swirl's famous as a STALLION who was awesome at magic back in a time when no one believed males could be safely taught to read.

I jokingly mentioned to a brony friend of mine that if Star Swirl had visible balls (as MLPs seem to avoid) his would be huge. That's why all the bells.
And yeah when I was looking for reference for him there are a few female interpretations. It's true that the only toy that goes by that name is female (and my Star Swirl is based color wise on it) - I also think that Equestria and the rest of the pony world is female dominated as well and would have been back then as well.
It's why I picked the idiot (Puddinghead) and the super-submissive character (Clover) to both be males in my headcanon - because that fits the Equestria ideology where women dominate what's going on (while evening out the genders a little).
But even so it seems like a few people still feel like their hooves are being stepped on. XD Oh wells. Hopefully they'll like my version of Platinum. She's the next one I'm working on.

No worries, no art has to conform to other people's views.
And agreed on the "probably always matriarch" side; I can imagine a matriarch could possibly turn into a patriarch but not the other way around. Probably not equality to matriarch either since, with all things equal, people are indeed rather equal.
...Unless there's some sort of illness that wiped out most the males, that'd do it too.

Well someone mentioned once that if you look at an average crowd scene in MLP it's all females - and even when they ARE being inclusive, it's still about a 12-to-1 ratio. I have no idea how that works out with breeding.

I like this character design. Too often people simply just assume that the founders of Equestra were simply reincarnations of the mane six.

Well, I sort of took it as a sort of Nativity Play...you usually end up with 7 year old shepherds picking their noses and angels with bent wings and a Joseph and Mary who are both girls, hate each other, and spend the whole thing pulling at each other's robes. It's very cute, but one suspects that the real events (were they real at all...) were somewhat different looking.
I'm planning on doing the whole set of them - just as ideas. Obviously some of them will be females: Hurricane (who is mentioned as being specifically female), Princess Platinum, and Smart Cookie.
Puddinghead will probably be male, and I'm not sure about Fluttershy's character yet. Probably female (because I can't imagine it any other way at the moment...but I'm not sure yet).
And you can reincarnate as the other gender, of course.

That's basically the way I see that episode as well, fun and cute, but not nessaraly 100% historically accurate.
That would be awesome, I'd love to see that. I've often wondered what they actually looked and acted like. What kind of leaders they were, etc.
I don't know. Pansy did reefer to Hurricane as 'her' but also addressed him/her as 'Sir', which might just be because he/she is her commanding officer, and in most militaries superior officers are addressed as 'sir' regardless of gender. Now I don't mean to sound sexist or anything, but I just have trouble imagining a military dictator being female, but then again, Rainbow is a mare, and if she were but in charge of a State, I guarantee that she would make herself a military dictator, so
As for the others, I'm not too sure about. I guess they could go either way. Well. except maybe Platinum, as her tittle is 'princess' (but then agin, 'Prince Platinum' as a nice ring to it as well...) One would have to rebuild her personality from the ground up to gender bend her, rather then simply tweak it, so I would keep her as a mare.
Smart Cookie could truly go either way, I think. She is betrayed as having a very gender neutral personality.
I have trouble imagining Puddinghead as a stallion, but I guess he/she could be. :Shrug:
I really can't help you with Pansy, as I don't even understand his/her roll in the Pegasi government at all. (Cookie and Clover were advisors, but Hurricane didn't seem to care at all about his/her opinion. Plus, how would a coward and pacifist become a military dictator's advisor?) He/she seemed pretty feminine, but I really don't know.
And finally as for Clover, His/her personality was Twilight's, with out any of her few feminine traits, so I definitely approve him/her being a stallion.

I'm sort of going from the idea that MLP is largely matriarchal (though more openminded than we were in say, medieval times) - and that there is still some sexism present throughout - so the strongest personalities are always females, the weaker or more submissive sorts are actually male. So naturally Hurricane is female, as well as Pansy (as males are more "grunt work" types - not military minds) - but Puddinghead is so insane (or stupid, probably stupid) that one could see him as a fully gender-despicable character. Sort of like a "ditzy lady" from a movie in the 50's - sexist, yes, but that's how you would represent a male character - as stupid (think Homer or Peter Griffin).
Using that basis - with the matriarchal bent with sexist roles, you can sort of weed out which characters would be obviously male vs. obviously female.
It's quite fun.

There is no argument that Pony society is a Matriarchy, especially 1000+ years ago. So yeah, it was probably believed that Stallions didn't have the mental capability to comprehend the many complexities of war.
The one thing I would argue is, Puddinghead said that he/she was elected a nd -- in such a matriarchal society -- it truly seems improbable that a Stallion would be elected in an open election. However, that is assuming that the chancellor is selected by the people, and not by a legislative body of some sort. But even then, I'm still not entirely sure how 'he' could of been elected. Perhaps, there where so many Strong candidates that he simply slipped through, or maybe respect of the position was so lacking, that nopony wanted it, and Puddinghead was the only one even ran.
And no worries, if I was overly sensitive about my religion, I wouldn't openly proclaim it on the internet XD
But after looking at yours, I do have one question, aren't they the same thing? O.o
