Description Star Swirl the Bearded teaches his faithful student Clover the Clever about the horrors known only as Windegos!

This took me about 18 hours and 100 layers to complete and BOY did PS7 not like me for having that many layers! I had to buckle and merge some just to make it stop chugging so hard. XD

Star Swirl is older in this image than my other one and has a grey beard now. I wanted him to look much older (and give him all his bells) so that Clover would look far younger in comparison.

I made Clover male - I thought a sort of ever-patient advisor for the prissy unicorn princess would have some impact as a male. Not to mention there's just not nearly enough strong male characters in MLP!

Clover's design is inspired by three ponies: G1 Clover (a pink mare with blue hair), G2 Clever Clover (a blue stallion with mint/purple/blue hair) and Twilight Sparkle herself. In general, I didn't want him to look EXACTLY like Clever Clover because Star Swirl is very blue on his own, so I lifted the color from Clever Clover/Clover's cutie marks (which are mint-colored) - and as I was working out his hair, I made it pink-striped on a whim and realized that made him look a little like Twilight. XD So I kept it. (He also looks like a popple. <3)

If there's interest, I can also turn OFF the Windegos so you can take a look at the characters and background in more detail.

Just google "wendigo" - they're quite disturbing creatures, for something that snuck into a kids TV show.

The muzzle shape here makes me think Clover is a guy. Just my thoughts. :s

Yep. He's a guy. A little more effeminate next to the manliness of Star Swirl, but definitely a guy!

Wasn't Clover a girl in the pageant? Or did they just decide to use Twilight to use the mane 6? Where did you get the idea that Clover's a guy?

Dembai In reply to Dragonchampion1 [2012-03-25 03:20:35 +0000 UTC]

Clover is merely a character in the pageant. There's no confirmation that any of them were male or female (other than possibly Commander Hurricane - where Pansy refers to the character as a "she" - as well as Princess Platinum, for obvious reasons!) - other than that I just figured they were up for grabs, and it didn't matter which gender they ACTUALLY were.

In my Headcanon, I see Clover and Puddinghead as male. The rest of them female.

I really don't mind the fact that MLP doesn't have many male characters, since 90% of all media doesn't have many strong female characters, plus different culture and all could result in females being the domanated gender while males had to go threw something like a "Stallion Rights" movement. Plus fans would get annoyed if there was more male cast and think they were be up staging the mane six.

Hey, many of fanfic got ruin because they were too male heavy.

While it's true, I'm always looking for strong male figures that are not "machoized" and not "stupid as heck" but also not "constantly having to submit to everyone around him" - I'm having a son soon - and while it's good for him to see females in a strong light, having no male figures to point out to him is a little sad for me. And seriously - there are lot of "strong" figures, but in general, they're often treated like morons or little children - especially by women. It's unfair.

I think Big Macintosh could be a good strong figure - if they ever let him get beyond one word lines. I think he's got a lot going for him. I also think it could be educational to girls to see a strong male figure without him being turned into a violence-monger (like the Buffalo/Apploosans), an idiot (like Soarin' during the Gala), or treated like an easily ignored child (like Spike).

But I agree - that should not be at the expense of the strong female characters.

Well the thing is the term "strong" for characters thens to have 10000000 different meanings. Mine is just well writen.

Take Rarity she might not be seem as "strong" becuase she's girly but I see she's very "strong" because she has character dept same with Fluttershy.

Dembai In reply to d715 [2012-02-25 02:43:43 +0000 UTC]

Well of them have strengths and weaknesses. But what again are, say, Spike's "strengths" other than putting up with a ton of abuse from Twilight, and being utterly submissive to Rarity? Sure they both are fond of him and don't TRY to harm him, but in general, they use him when they need him, discipline him when he's done something 'wrong', and ignore him otherwise.

He would be much stronger if he asserted himself - and it's always possible that he will one day - but until then, I don't think of him as a strong male rolemodel (and through no fault of his own - the writers simply won't stop using him as everyone's kick ball).

d715 In reply to Dembai [2012-02-25 03:04:45 +0000 UTC]

there is nothing wrong with the male being the more submissive parther to the female (if you ship Spike and Rarity together or course)

then again he's more of Twilight's annoying little brother, I have an annoying little brother and Spike is spot on.

Plus he's getting his own episode soon were he learns about his history

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Dembai In reply to d715 [2012-02-25 08:00:48 +0000 UTC]

I'm glad he's getting another episode, and hopefully we can see him come into his own.

And the issue isn't that he's submissive - that would be fine if every female in his life didn't treat him like dirt, or like his place is to be submissive. And it wouldn't be so bad if he got some recognition from anyone, including his "good friends", when he works his tail off to please them.

It's true - he's just a stereotypical little brother character. But my issue is that if they can give the female characters huge piles of depth, why the heck should the only male character with screen time and lines get snubbed and ignored so often?

I am really pulling for him to come into his own. Because as good as it is for little girls to see strong female figures, it's also good for them to see that boys/men are people too.

d715 In reply to Dembai [2012-02-25 08:23:47 +0000 UTC]

Well, the only females he really interracts is Twilight and Rarity

Twilight gets a past because of the above little brother bit, because I treat mine wrost than Twilight does. And Rarity never treats him badly.

And Again this is one of the few well writen girls shows on air, I think it gets a free past for not having many guy characters, even more so wend there are a dozen other shows with well writen male stars.

Plus you know budget reasons and Hasbro wants it to to be mostly female.

Very nice.

I've often thought that t would be really interesting to see an episode set in that time, not just being acted out by the main characters.

I'd love to see that too - mostly to see how they would design those characters.

But I guess I can understand why they wouldn't...unless Twilight learned to time travel. XD
