Description A couple of people asked for a sewing pattern for the Shrouded Robes, so I attempted to make one. I've never made (or even used) a sewing pattern before, so I don't know how helpful this will be, but I hope it gives all the information anyone might need.

I didn't do anything for the trousers since they're just normal trousers, and sewing patterns/tutorials for them can be found anywhere. Or you can do what I did and just buy some black trousers. I was lucky enough to find some made out of the same material as the rest of it.

As for the hood... I somewhat cheated making mine (added bits to the front that weren't originally there), and wasn't entirely sure how to make what the sewing pattern for it actually should be. If I were to make it again I'd probably make a shape like this, but I don't know how to make a hood that perfectly sits in the way the hood in the game does (or if that's even possible, for that matter).

I hope this makes sense, and if any of it doesn't, or anyone has any other questions as to how I did something, feel free to ask and I'll explain as best I can. And if anyone has any suggestions as to how to make this better, I'll try to update it. Let me know if you use it, I'd love to see what you make!

It's all basically a modified Viking T Tunic. The hood would need to be sewn separate from the mantle, though. The diamond shaped piece you have is equivalent to a viking hooded mantle, which is basically one long rectangle with two squares sewn to it. If you look up a pattern for a Viking hood, you may be able to modify it to fit the shrouded robes a bit better.

I think the mantle portion would be more fitted if cut in 2 pieces so that the seam would allow you to fit it to your own shoulders. The hood would need to curve around the neckline though, so I'd see the hoot as a U in the back with two triangle "tails" tapering down the front of the neckline. The seam going along the crown of the head mimicks the Viking hood more genuinely, only a bit rounded where on the Viking hood the one "corner" piece usually is. Here's a photo of a Viking hood, so hopefully my description makes sense when comparing this to the shrouded hood. Β  www.hurstwic.org/history/artic…

Ah yeah, a Viking hood looks right! Though might have to be careful of where the seams are depending on how well they'd line up with the dark black bits. Thanks!

I think I'm just brainstorming now myself, lol.

Actually, the black bits could be added on as appliques. Both historically and in cosplay, I'd say anyone would do this as an applique instead of trying to match the black pieces. They're more for decoration than functionality. For the other parts, red appliques over black, of course. Always choose the smaller color as the applique. At the hem, you just fold under and iron it down. Sewing a satin stitch over the detail work in thread of the same color would keep the fabric from fraying, and it's what people do with appliques anyway. I wouldn't make the stitches too tall/wide, just enough to hide the fabric ends. Embroidery thread would make for less work.

The trim at figure D could be found instead of cut, if anyone desires. Lots of SCAdians use this kind of diamond shaped trim since it's historically accurate for most European countries in the known medieval world. For cosplayers who want more flair, they can choose from quite a variety as opposed to just sewing the details on. Though it would be kinda cool to see that done with silver thread.

I meant you don't want the hem on the red fabric to go lower than where the black would be as you wouldn't want it to be visible (since there's no hem visible on the front of the mantle in the game) and it looks like the hems of a viking hood go lower than the black parts do.

I'd also prefer to make the trim rather than buy it so that you were using the same black and red fabric as the rest. Though my silver lines could have been way better, I ran out of time and taped on that plastic ribbon used for wrapping presents lol

In game you certainly won't see accurate stitching or hemming. A viking hood basically has two squares as gores on the front and back that are turned as a diamond shape. The only difference with a real viking hood and the shrouded robes is that the shoulder's are shorter and the front & back gores come to a longer point. The both gores go down to the belt. The shoulders are shortened to supposedly aid in movement. Since a lot of it is only based on history, I'm sure they do a lot of cheaty things on the graphics to make it look cool without doing much work. That often means you couldn't copy a real pattern from it.

Because games aren't realistic that's why I rarely base my stuff off real things, I'll make my own pattern to fit the game (also because I don't know the real things they're based off of lol).Β

Yeah, it's easiest to make your own pattern. But it also helps to look up the medieval variations. You're often left with very easy patterns. Like a basic tunic can be done in only 2 seams, and a kirtle or cotehardie in only 4 seams unless you add gores. The modern costume patterns are loads more complex, with no reason to be, lol.

Yeah, I'll have to have a look at old clothing patterns more often!

Thanks for the tutorial. I don't have time to make a new set of robes, as my next con is 2 weeks away XD I spent all the other months building weapon props and I still have 3 to make before my con in April 2013. *I changed my username, I was Valky24, Dark Brotherhood cosplay.*

Hmm, it MIGHT be possible to make in two weeks if you're good at sewing. What 3 more weapon props do you have to make??

I'm nearing completion of one of my new Daedric swords. But I still need to make another one. Then I need to make another Mehrunes Razor, with Scabbard and the Blade of Woe. I'm about 75% done my first sword and not started on any of the other yet.

And no, I'm not good at sewing. Buildng weapon props is my talent. Sewing, not to much.

You really don't want to risk running out of weapons lol. Do you carry them all round the expo?

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Danceswithcosplayers In reply to DemoraFairy [2013-03-27 22:02:49 +0000 UTC]

Well that's the thing, even with all these weapons, I will have scabbards, sheaths, and loops to carry them on. So my hands will be free when I go. They'll either be on my belt or on the sword holder on my back that will carry both my swords.

Fair enough. Definitely sounds like lots to make!

Not really. I just finished both my swords the other day [link]

I can't work on my 2 daggers this weekend; Blade of Woe and Mehrunes Razor. But they're half the length of my daedric swords and neither of them have serrated teeth like my swords do, so they'll be easy to make. I have family over, so I can't work on them at the moment.

DemoraFairy In reply to VoidQueenElishiva [2012-03-23 19:08:22 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, I couldn't think of a simpler way to do the hood. It might just be easier to Google a generic hood tutorial and follow that.
