I was watching the 1931 version of Dracula, and happened upon one of the coolest characters in horror history. At least to me. Renfield, in this version played by Dwight Frye, totally rules. ^^ Yet another favorite character who eats bugs. YAY! So of course I had to draw Todd as Renfield. I was planning on doing this for the Halloween contest, for but didn't get it done in time. Darn class. *shakes fist*Well, hope enough people have seen the original Dracula to get Todd's transformation into the defective but loyal bug-eating vampire goodness that is Renfield. ^^

Toad as Renfield is so fitting. Heck, didn't the original Toad from the 60's comics refer to Magneto as "master"?

More than just me - Rachel aka Earthenwing actually came up with the idea. She'd already seen Dracula and liked Renfield, but when I introduced her to Toad, she got the connection. ^o^ Then *I* watched Dracula and saw it too. ^^

Well someone besides me has been watching the Dracula Legacy...
I guess it's appropriate because Toady and Renny both eat flies. I wonder how Toad would feel about them rats? Mmmmm rats. Thosands of beady red eyes looking up at him... and they are all HIS!!!

I'm not sure how to critique it because the comical/satire value is just so high in my book. I can't stop smiling at him... and making the sounds effects. Man the Renfield was f***** up.
Love the prison bar shadows. It says so much... without drawing too much. compositionally wise.

i really dig the shading, and the look on Todd's face here. that's a pretty interesting crossover. he looks like the cutest nutcase ive ever laid eyes on...except, of course, my ex, but that's a different story altogether...

R.M. Renfield must be one of every actor's dreams. I haven't seen Tod Browning's film, so I'm not familiar with Dwight Frye's performance, but I'll never forget how Tom Waits acted as Renfield for Francis Ford Coppola in the early 90's. I like the powerful curiousness in Todd-field's eyes because the character is never portrayed as a simple nutcase to demonstrate the Count's potential effect on mortal men; there's always intense spirit behind the screaming, and one always feels a bit sorry for him. I also enjoy how the light source works, suggesting both that Todd-field is committed and that his cell is dark in one stone.
