Description I've been so busy for school I haven't had much time for art. Here's a traditional piece. So sorry for the absence, I've just been doing anatomy studies on my spare time and I don't think you'd guys find that very interesting lol. Here's my little creature, the Fish-o-dile! This is the desert species, the swamp species is more amphibious. This is a big male guarding his brood. They are actually amphibious, they have thicker skin and can secrete a mucus on their skin that hardens and protects them from loosing water. They are nocturnal and hunt at night. During the day they find shade and sleep, preferably near water sources. At the beginning of spring males find small pools and guard them from other males, males become very aggressive and territorial and will guard these pools with their life. Females will choose the male with the largest pool. After the female lays the eggs the female leaves and the male rears the offspring. Females lay a small number of eggs so she doesn't loose too much water herself. It usually takes 8-10 months for the young to reach full size. Males are larger and have a larger frill on their head.
I really do like this piece, really need to improve my water painting techniques, but it doesn't look too bad. I think the values are off so it doesn't look reflective. But overall I'm happy with it.
There is an annoying blotch on it from spilt water. It's so obnoxious.

Pretty interesting concept I do see here! Mix of crocodile and fish is not just a unique, but also good thing since structure of fish's heads.
About background: you could try a bit in terms of making it less flat. Also about effects and lines you used here on background - try to look how do people use them. But not bad I could say. Also shores and sky had been done good enough.
About fishodiles: you could add more of scales, but work with everything other is pretty nice. As well as fusion between these animal is sucessful and really looking consistent.

Sorry for the late reply, so busy! :3 Thank you so much for taking the time to give me some constructive feedback. I really appreciate it! Backgrounds are challenging with a new medium, so thank you for the advice. I'm glad you like my fishodile. I was pretty happy with the design. Thanks so much!

Amazing what you find when you wander DA randomly. Sooooo tempted to steal this as a predator creature for my reddit evolution game...

Nice to see some work from you again! I always enjoy your creature creations. These little creatures are actually rather cute in their own way, in fact they look like a species that could feasibly exist. The skin of the creatures is nicely patterned and textured, the shading is nicely done too. I personally would have liked to have seen some more blue sky filling up the white parts of the piece (maybe something as simple as a light blue paint wash) to make the piece feel really complete. But other than that, great work once again, keep it up!

The white is really annoying I agree. I think next time I'm going to try a watercolor/gouache wash for the sky. I don't like to paint the sky with markers since it eats up too much ink and I'm broke lol. But the marker paper shows some promise with gouache so I'll try that next.

I never recommend painting sky with markers anyway, last time I did that it wore all my blue markers out (not good when my preferred markers can cost $5 each) and then I couldn't get them to blend as I wanted. Though I've never tried it myself, paint is usually the way to go for sky anyway. Though I imagine you'd have to apply the paint wash for the sky first before painting the landscape and creatures, so it's probably too late to retroactively apply a paint wash to this piece. You could probably go over the white areas lightly with a blue pencil if you still wanted to add sky to it though.

I do like that you still indicate the area where the sky should be with a series of blue marker borders though, so the sky isn't missing completely

That's what I was thinking. Next time I'll add a more detailed background. The blue outline is a nice touch i think, I actually applied it to try and hide the water blotch...lol kinda successful.

Well, I couldn't spot the water blotch and I looked at the image for quite a while, so I think the blue outline was successful in masking it
