Description
The manticore (Baricos in Greek) is a legendary creature similar to the Egyptian sphinx. It has the body of a red lion, a human head with three rows of sharp teeth (like a shark), and a trumpet-like voice. Other aspects of the creature vary from story to story. It may be horned, winged, or both. The tail is that of either a dragon or a scorpion, and it may shoot poisonous spines to either paralyse or kill its victims. The creature's feet may also be of a dragon. -WikipediaI got a monster book for my birthday which is pretty cool - except for the illustrations. So that's basically what inspired me to do my own
My concept was a particularly vile manticore guarding a secret mountaintop city or something. I went for a more beastly-looking face since I didn't like the idea of a human head on an animal's body.

Wow! Amazing work! Love it!
I was wandering if you could let me us this image for an Android game called "Kingdoms of Myth", it's turn based strategy game based on a fantasy World. You can find a little bit more info in this rough website made by my colleges [link] (Sorry for the bad English). Of course you will have full credits of your work and link to your webpage if you want
Lot of thanks for your time

Hello,
thanks for answering, but our project is a non commercial project, we want to provide it for free on Google Play without ads. So by the moment we can't afford paying. Hope that at least we win some notoriety and for our next project we could afford paying illustrations to great artists like you.
Greetings and have a nice day!

Good use of lighting; love the background. Manticore looks sinister against the light behind him.
He looks somewhat short, out of proportion, like the legs should be taller,
but that might also be because of the way you have him placed on the rocks.
Did you say you did this in Photoshop?

It's funny, I did a manticore recently myself and whilst I've adhered to most of the same properties of the creature as you have the results couldn't be more polar opposites. I love it how everyone's art inevitably expresses the artist themselves. This is very good by the way

Omg crazy face and your lighting is fantastic. Your colours and style is really nice - I especially like the crosshatching effect for the background. Great sense of atmosphere. The manticore itself looks very scary!

This is pretty much what a Manticore should "feel like". Indeed they are not only "human face" but "ugly human face", so your interpretation is right. By the way, this is the best Manticore interpretation i've seen. Thx for sharing!

I like this a lot. It's just what I'd imagine a manticore to look like. That book wouldn't happen to be called "There be Dragons Here" or something like that? I have that book, and I wasn't too impressed with the pictures. They are mostly pictures of old paintings and artifacts, which is nice in a way, but not especially spectacular, if you know what I mean.

Thanks
No, it's called "The Monster Hunter's Handbook". The pictures inside are all black, white, red and gray (which could look stylish but it doesn't) and kind of crappily drawn vectors or something (looks a bit like MS Paint too xD). So it's not that they're not spectacular, they actually suck >.<

Amazing! I adore the shading and the colours, and the anatomy of the manticore is brilliant. Also love the background, astonishing work.
Keep it up!

yeah, I'm especially curios about the rake-thingy-brush is that in the custom brushes of photoshop? I like that effect a lot

depingo In reply to curlhead [2009-03-16 17:21:01 +0000 UTC]
It's a cross-hatching brush I made myself.
How to make it
(if you don't know how to make brushes, check this out: [link] )
The actual brush shape is 6 diagonal lines - just draw them like scratches from claws, black on white. Spacing is 37% and in Shape Dynamics I set the angle jitter to 27%. You can also play a bit with Color Dynamics, but that's optional.
Hope that helps
