Description Paper Mario/Mario Story sprites for Kurocula, a vampire enemy from Super Mario Land 2: Six Golden Coins. In addition to the canon male design, I've also included a custom, rule-breaking female design.

Kurocula is actually the enemy's German name. Usually, whenever a Mario character has no English name, I use the Japanese one according to Mariowiki's findings. In this case, that would be Kurokyula. However, due to the pun of this guy's species combined the Japanese word for "dark" with "Dracula", as well as wishing to localize future enemies by a less Engrishy name, I'm going with the coincidentally available and more fitting German name.

Unlike that other video game mascot's world, there's no rapping in Pumpkin Zone. There are, however, a bunch of vampires, or people who look like vampires, lurking near the goal bells. Kurocula's main thing is summoning bats, bats, lots of bats...and pretty much nothing else. According to that character guide for the Mario series at that point in time, though, Kurocula actually build Pumpkin Zone's first stage, long before Mario claimed the region as his own.

The surprises don't stop there, either. While Kurocula only appeared in one game, it's his appearance in the Kodansha Super Mario manga that suggests a very particular lineage of sorts. In that manga, Kurocula was Wario's main sidekick during the adaptation of Super Mario Land 2. Like any vampire, yet unlike his greedy boss, Kurocula can't stand garlic, giving the Mario bros a big opening to beat him with. Even more juicy, during one scheme to frame the heroes, while Wario of course disguised himself as Mario, Kurocula disguised himself as none other than Luigi. Some of this stuff together paints a rather enlightening picture...Kurocula is pretty much Waluigi, before Waluigi even existed!
