Eighth gen Paper Mario style sprites for Private Goomp, a member of the Elite Trio from the Mario and Luigi RPG series. Two sets of sprites are present- the pure blue appearance Goomp takes for most of the series, and the blackhat from Dream Team.

The most worrywartish of the group, Private Goomp can be a little skeptical. Despite his shaky allegiances, though, he is ultimately friends with the other two.

Release-wise, Private Goomp and the rest of the Elite Trio first appeared in Mario & Luigi: Bowser’s Inside Story, as well as the game’s remake and its extra story, Bowser Jr’s Journey. Chronologically, meanwhile, he and the others appeared in Bowser’s Minions, the side mode of Superstar Saga’s remake, released after certain restrictions on the Mario series infested it. Let’s just say Bowser himself should have been more suspicious of their motives a long time ago.
Regardless, the three returned one last official time in Mario & Luigi: Dream Team. Goomp and his buds even got to be full turn-based bosses!

Weirdly, even though they had every reason to be present, the official Paper Jam doesn’t feature or mention them at all. The fantopic recut of Paper Jam rectifies that, giving the Trio the role of a certain wizard in Gloomy Woods. They even get a major role turning the tides towards the end...
