Paper Mario/Mario Story style sprites for Mechachomp, a robot guarddog from the original GBA version of Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. This was a request from ColorfulDJ.

The students of Woohoo Hooniversity delve into many studies, from refracting lights, to barrel rolling, to Item Blocks found across the world, and of course, robotics. Their pride and joy is man's worst enemy combined with machinery- the Mechachomp. Rather than run normally, the robotic sphere dogs use the hidden skates under their feet to roll around. When facing two- count them, two- opponents, they tend to cycle about their decision before picking whom to attack. One would need to be some kind of smart brain guy to figure it out. Thankfully, hitting them really hard sometimes makes them short-circuit. Unfortunately, it further muddles the idea of predictability.

Strangely, Mechachomp is the only Superstar Saga enemy- and Alphadream-created enemy, for that matter- that didn't return for the 3DS remake, with the mainline Mechakoopa taking its spot as a full enemy. It's not fully known why Mechachomp didn't get to roll out onto the 3DS, as several mainliner-looking foes did get to return despite the restrictions, and Mechachomp is rather simple to pose/animate when one gets to work with it. My own guess is along with Alphadream going through financial hardship, the lights on Mechachomp's visor very quickly switching between red and green. It's not quite red and blue, but perhaps Alphadream and Nintendo suddenly feared having a second Electric Soldier.
