Description Paper Mario/Mario Story style sprites for Mechakoopa, a mechanical terrapin from Super Mario World. Also included is Blasta Mechakoopa and Zappa Mechakoopa, from Super Mario Maker 2.

At the very end of their Dinosaur Island adventure, Mario and Luigi finally did it- they reached Bowser’s Castle! Inside the castle, among a maze of malicious mooks were metal Mechakoopas! Like Dry Bones, though they could be jumped on and knocked out for a bit, they got back up within seconds. Unstoppable, unyielding, and endlessly marching, Mechakoopas advanced with fiery breath, like some kind of eliminate-ey, annihilate-ey Australian.
Just when all hope seemed lost, though, Mario and Luigi discovered how to deal with them- simply pick them up and throw them at other enemies, or even the lava. Lots of kids love throwing things in the lava. It’s even worthy of a thumbs up in some cases.

Oh, and Bowser used them during his final battle with Mario in Dinosaur Island.

After a long absense, following a one-off appearance in Mario Party Advance, Mechakoopas returned to the Mario franchise. From the New Super Mario Bros series, to a redesign in Super Mario Galaxy, and a big boss role in Mario Party 10, Mechakoopas were back in the public conscience. I guess the future isn’t set in stone, or metal.

Regarding Paper Mario and Mario RPGs in general, Mechakoopas first appeared in Super Mario RPG by Square Enix. After that, they also appeared in the original version and remake of Superstar Saga…being the only enemy to replace an RPG original, a robotic Chain Chomp, in the latter. Following that, they returned for Dream Team and the Paper Jam crossover as enemies, as well as accompanying the Koopa Prince as some of his first minions in Bowser Junior’s Journey. Lastly, and most relevant, they appear as Folded minions in Paper Mario The Origami King. Rather than normal enemies, though, they took over Amazy Dayzee’s role of a rewarding enemy who runs from battles.

Mechakoopas equally share a long and vast history in fan stories and fangames. As far as this writer can recall of the top of his head, Mechakoopas retained their enemy role in the fantopic recut of Paper Jam.
