Description Paper Mario/Mario Story sprites for the modern version of Thwomp. These sprites match his current mainline appearance, and recreate his linework from the modern Paper Mario games, such as The Origami King.

After 2012, Thwomp...was pretty much still Thwomp. From all the New Super Mario Bros games, to almost all the 3D Mario platformers like Super Mario 3D World (though absent in Odyssey, oddly enough), Thwomp was still trying to smush Mario into a pancake.
Mario Kart 8 gave Thwomp his own racetrack with Thwomp Ruins, a lost relic that defied gravity (as per many of the courses), while Tour encouraged hopping on Thwomps for tricks and points.
On the party side of things, Thwomp was the first obstacle in Mario Party Island Tour's Perilous Palace Path board map. He forced partiers to pick a switch for lowering a bridge. If they picked a wrong button? HE SQUISHED THEM!

And now for the main attraction, their role in modern Paper Mario and any alternate versions of them.
Thwomps returned in the Wii U game with the brand name. There, Iggy summoned them if Mario took too long or missed his only shot with a very specific bone, Iggy would summon Thwomp to deal a lot of damage.
Actually, perhaps I misspoke. When I say "a  lot of damage", you might assume I mean something like 20 or 30 ATK, hehe! ...No. No.
The power of Iggy dropping a Thwomp on Mario...is 999 damage. Literally the strongest attack in the series, with only one boss in the game after equalling it.
Next, an evil Thwomp (or we can assume it was evil) slammed the Sunset Express for no reason, other than to be evil.

Thwomps returning in greater numbers in The Origami King. This time, four different circumstances present several different Thwomps with the ability to eliminate Mario in one shot.

The recut fantopic of the Wii U game removed Iggy's Thwomp superattack and merely made his chariot attack super strong... but the evil train-destroying Thwomp remained. Better watch your choo-choo's...
