After her caregiver left for the day, Nina was not tired enough to go to sleep. Since she was taking various naps during the day, she knew that she would not be able to close her eyes for at least a few more hours. She felt like continuing her book, but forgot to tell her caregiver to bring it to the bedroom. Under normal circumstances, getting it from the kitchen would be a non-issue. But with one knee stiffened by a cylinder cast, her other leg stuck in an angled leg cast, and unable to use two crutches due to a massive arm cast held in place by a rigid brace, this seemed like an impossible task. Or at least a very risky one.

After some back and forth, she decided to go for it. With disastrous consequences: She made it into the hallway, where she stumbled over the carpet, crashed against her apartment door, and sank ungraciously to the ground. For the case something like this would happen, she had taken her phone with her. But with her arm (the one not fixated by a cast) twisted in an unnatural way, there was no chance to use it. Her only glimmer of hope was her phone's voice assistant, who activated itself due to her whimpering. This glimmer however faded quickly, as it became clear there was no way she could make herself understood through her heavily wired jaw.

Due to the excruciating pain every movement caused, she had little other choice than to lie still on the cold floor. The light of day slowly settled and her apartement became became dark, only to be dimly illuminated again from time to time by her phone display, whenever her moaning became loud enough to activate the voice assistant. The crushing pain kept her awake through what felt like the longest night of her life. As dawn began to break, she finally heard noises in the hallway outside her apartment - probably her neighbor on the way to the office - and succeeded in making herself heard by groaning loudly enough. When the paramedics arrived shortly after, she thought her suffering would finally come to an end. But since they had no key they had no choice but to break down the door. The very same door she had bumped into the night before and had been lying behind ever since…
