Manqoba is Sabah's only child and becomes leader of his pride as a young adult. He inherits his grandfather Reth's strength and viciousness. However, he also inherited his grandfather's low fertility, never having any cubs of his own. By the time the two males come to challenge him for his pride, he is old and has no defenders to help him. Thus, he is ousted from his pride and he retreats into the jungle. After meeting Simba, he eventually warms up to the cub and helps teach him how to hunt, and especially how to fight, know it is a vital survival skill for young male lions.

I know it's a popular theory that Tanglemane takes Simba under his wing and teaches him how to be a lion, and I am fully jumping on that theory for my headcanon. Someone had to feed Simba something other than bugs.
