She had to careful, and she had to be quick.
Though the beach looked deserted, thought not a soul seemed to be among the sands she couldn't really afford to take a chance!
At the same time she really couldn't just leave them there.
Caught upon the beach.
Trapped in a puddle.
Exposed to untold peril and danger.
She braced herself by the land shore, ready to spring into action.
They were just fifteen feet away, from her. Fifteen feet that might as well be a mile.
"If a human catches you all will be lost!" Her elders had warned her. "Our secret, which has lasted these last five hundred years, will be lost and man, that ever curious, ever covetous creature will come looking for us..."
There was a lot at stake...
But the clown fish were her friends and she simply couldn't abandon them!
Peering out once more she surveyed the beach with great care.
Again not a soul was in sight, not a single smell of man or of his fowl smelling machines nearby.
She took a deep breath, mouthed a quick prayer...
...and was off!
Across the sand she darted, moving to and fro the speed and agility of a land serpent over the finely crushed and granulated rock.
When she came to the puddle her friends were still in a panic, swimming this way and that way as they tried in vain to return to the sea.
She gently placed her hand upon the water's surface and within a moment the twin fish had regained their composure.
"I'll take you back just one at a time." she whispered into the water. "But you've got to remain calm! If you thrash about I might..."
She stopped midsentence as she suddenly became aware that something or someone had moved before her and was blocking the sun's light.
Slowly she looked up as her heart began to race faster and faster...
She met a pair of eyes. Eyes as blue as hers and as blue as the sea. They stared at her with wide and enraptured curiosity.
He was short. Barely three human feet high and wore a little grey suit and short pants that were covered with sand. His bright blond hair was cut short and unevenly allowing strands to stick up at odd angles.
She breathed a sigh of relief. It was a child! Throughout the hidden history of her race it was common knowledge that drunks and small children were the easiest to deal with and the least likely to be believed.
Ever under the boy's unblinking gaze she scooped up the first fish and dashed for the waterline.
In the blink of an eye, or at least that's it seemed, she was back at the puddle.
The boy hadn't moved an inch.
She had scooped up the second fish and was just about top leave when the boy spoke:
"Are you lost-ed too?"
She stopped, frozen in her tracks.
She stared at the boy, giving him a long true look.
Though there was a slight pudge in his cheeks, as was often true with children, he did look...thinner than normal. (Whatever was normal for human children anyway) His clothes, thought at one point were, or might have been very fine, were tattered and stained. And his little lips were cracked and bleeding, perhaps from far too much exposure to the sun and its glaring heat.
She wanted to flee. To dash back to the safety and comfort of the sea, just take her friend and dive back into the water never to return...
But her heart wouldn't let her. he could not let this little one, no matter what the crimes of his kin and kind were, suffer the death that now loomed over him.
She glanced down at the clown fish who was floating with the waters of her cupped hands.
Just what, she wondered, should she do?
What should she do...

I saw your beautifully brilliant piece and the story simply...appeared.(Not that I didn't have to work to form and phrase the initial spectral shape into something more clear...)
