Grasshoppers were everywhere yesterday, especially in this park I visited. I don't know why they were so numerous, but nature always has a good reason for these things.Related content

Most of the time I miss these "sneak attack" shots, but sometimes I get lucky. I think good photos are very often a matter of right time/right place!

VERY lucky! Grasshoppers have good vision, like most insects, and fly away when you get too close to them. This guy didn't seem to care that I was a few feet away; also, I moved in on him very slowly.

He was really not afraid of me! I started at a greater distance, then kept moving in very slowly, snapping all the while. Some animals are more shy than others, though.

They do say to shoot bugs when it's cold.

I guess it may have been too chilly. I think a lot of bugs like to sit in the sunny, wind-free spots for that very reason.

Thank you. There were so many of these things flying around yesterday. At one point, I thought about grabbing one and putting him in the refrigerate for awhile (like you used to do with moths) so as to calm him down. But this one was pretty calm, so I didn't need to do all that!
