EXERT
(Darkness, again darkness surrounded her. Was this a dream or was this a long forgotten memory? A crack of light broke the suffocating blackness. “Mana, I have a dress for you.” Mael’s young voice said. He entered, pushing a heavy door open. He had a torch in one hand and in the other a shimmering garment. She could see only his face, naked torso and arm in the dim light of the torch. Across his chest were leather straps and metal fasteners. Once again, Cassy was unable to speak. Mael had told her that Mana could not speak, that she was mute. But she could hear. Mael was talking in the strange language again. “I hope you like it… mother made it for you from one of her old dresses. They have accepted you and they said you may stay with us.” Mael seemed so happy when he said this it made her want to cry, because she knew how this would end. He helped her put the dress on, treating her like a doll that might break at any moment. Never once did he touch her like a lover though, what ever they had, it was more a friendship. When they had finished he took her to the small ray of light leaking from outside and opened the door wide. Cassy had never seen anything like this place. The walls looked like black marble and large pillars vanished up in the height of the spiraling stairway. Dark stone and multi colored tiles with light mortar made up the entire stairwell once they began their decent. Torches were lit every few feet so there was a good amount of light to see while walking the stairs. Cassy wasn’t sure how she knew but she knew that it was for the servants to see while coming and going. It wasn’t until they reached the landing that she saw Mael in the light for the first time in his entirety. Though it seemed that she wasn’t entirely in control of her actions in the memory or dream, she must have mentally lurched back at the sight of him. Horns and six wings, the very image of the beast in the drawings she had seen. He wore a long black gown on his bottom half, with a wide red stripe on the left side. His arms were covered in straps and chains, more like adornment than anything else, and his frame was small, weak looking. He was a child. Sixteen he had said he was when Mana died. He couldn’t have been older than that now as she looked at him. The three wings on his left side were leathery and bat-like. Similar to how they had looked when they flew. The three on the right were white, beautiful feathers that seemed to glow in the fire light. “Come, Mana. I promised to show you the progress father has made in the city. I bet that everyone will look at you and be jealous of your beauty.” He said and guided her to two large doors that were made of ornate filigree metal work. The doors were opened by what must have been servants, dressed much like Mael but more uniformed. Both servants had bright red eyes and starkly black hair. Cassy didn’t pay much attention to it until she began to notice that almost all the people they passed on there way out looked exactly the same. They stepped out onto a large expanse of stone that lead to a wide stairway leading down to a street of cobblestone. From this point, Cassy could see a city surrounding them. Tall dark buildings rose of like spires for miles around. The city was massive and to the farthest point you could see an odd red hazed hovering, blocking the sun… They walked down the steps and onto the road. Some parts were paved in stones and others were not. Perhaps that was what he had meant about his father making progress? Were they rebuilding this city? She wondered. It seemed so. Some buildings were nearly destroyed whereas others were being refurbished. The streets had many people walking them. Most of them looked like the servants: Black hair, white, matte skin and red eyes. But as they continued the people began to look different, some had violet hair and dark brown skin, some had green, red or golden hair and light skin but all had very long sharp ears. Cassy saw some people that looked like they were human pass by too. They called a name out to Mael, he ignored it. They called another name out, more forcefully this time, and he ignored it again. Cassy saw two other men join the humans, but these men were not human, they had the light features, pointed ears and strangely colored hair of the other people they had passed. One of the men forcefully grabbed Cassy, or Mana, away from Mael and held her. They called him horrible names, pushed him, prodded him but he never let his eyes drift from her nor did he retaliate aggressively. “Let her go… please.” He asked so gently she couldn’t believe it was the same man she knew now. One of the human men hit him in the back as hard as he could with some sort of weapon, she couldn’t see it well, and forced him to the ground. He was still watching her, his eyes burning with unshed tears as they pressed something to his face that burned him. One of the nonhuman men stomped the beautiful white wings until they bled red. He grinded his boot so hard into them the feathers gave way to flesh and bone. “rinci! Princi spawn!” They laughed. Mana, not Cassy, struggled to get free and run to him. She screamed without sound for them to stop. It was then the men turned their hate to her. The man holding her, a nonhuman, locked her arms behind her. The free human man called her names in the odd language but as she understood it, he was calling her a whore and they meant to treat her like one. She could hear Mael screaming as they threw her to the ground, she could hear him pleading, begging… offering up his life for hers. Her head hit the ground hard, she nearly blacked out but she tried to keep her eyes open. The man, who had been stomping Mael’s feathered wings, now placed a boot to his head and crushed his face into the ground. All the while, “lease… please…leave her alone… please,” was chanted, even when they pressed hard enough to crack his jaw, he pleaded. Mana was blocking out the men ripping her clothes, violating her, by watching Mael’s eyes. Cassy was amazed that she could, because she could feel the pain herself, the pain of her innocence being brutally taken and the horrible force they used trying to make her scream. The man that was grinding his boot into Mael’s face became angry at the continuous pleas and pulled a short sword from his belt. He grabbed one of Mael’s wings and hacked it off. A flood of tears began pouring down Mana’s cheeks. And to her surprise, all Cassy could hear inside her head was Mana, praying that God might save Mael. She offered her soul, her life, everything. She just wanted him to live, because he had been the only one to ever be kind to her, to love her unconditionally. A black haze began to veil her eyes and then there was the pain of something cold sliding across her neck. A cry echoed out, the sound of a soul being warped and a heart being destroyed. Then there was nothing. )
