“The islanders tell tales of the White Serpents,… creatures from the most ancient times of the island,… said to be the most vicious and dangerous creatures ever seen,… terrifyingly aggressive, and with venom so potent a single drop could kill any living creature, no matter how big, truly, they were feared by all. Yet, no one has seen one in countless seasons, and most now believed them to be just myths,… so imagine my surprise when I stumbled upon one in the jungle one day,…

When I found him he was lying in a shady grove in the jungle,… he had large wounds on his sides, and was bleeding,… I could only guess that perhaps hunters had done this to him, but I had no way of knowing. My first instinct was to stay away, a wounded animal of that size could be extremely dangerous,… but then he looked up at me, and I could see the fear in his eyes, then I saw how he was shaking. He was hurt and scared,… it may have been risky, but I couldn’t just leave him there to die,…

I put down my spear, to show him I wasn’t going to hurt him, and he seemed to calm, his shaking lessening. I quickly got to work, tending his wounds, gathering and applying medicinal herbs, using my arm and leg wraps for bandages, then force feeding him more medicinal herbs and fruit, all the while stroking him gently to keep him calm. Then I just sat there with him, keeping him safe and waiting to see if what I had done would be enough.

I must have dozed off at some point, because I woke to find myself nose to nose with the big snake, as he seemed to be looking me over curiously. As he did so I felt his scaly coils shifting around me and realized I might be in trouble, and my mind started to think of way out. But suddenly he leaned in and give a quick lick of his forked tongue across my face, before pressing his head against mine, giving off a low soft hissing, that almost sounded similar to purring,… almost,… and I quickly realized that he was snuggling up to me. Then I realized I had just made a new friend.

Ozzy, which is what I named him,… after a strange singer some tourists let me listen to,… has been my loyal friend and companion ever since. He’s not much of a fighter, and I try to keep him out of fights and away from the villains,… I couldn’t forgive myself if he got hurt,… but he can look very intimidating when he wants to, and can easily scare off most animals in the jungle when he rears up, glares and gives off a low hiss. He sometimes lets me ride him, and he is very fast,… a great way to get safely through the jungle at times, which I really appreciate,… he’s also pulled me out of a few sticky situations here and there too. He may seem very intimidating, especially because of his size, but he can be very shy, gentle, and affectionate,… and he loves to snuggle and get his belly rub,… to me he’s like a big puppy dog. And no, he doesn’t eat people, he is a good snake, and is quite happy eating fruit and fish, though he doesn’t share my love of sweets.

I do sometimes wonder if he really is a snake or not though,… unlike other snakes I’ve seen in the jungle he seems to have very good hearing, and he can close his eyes,… he’s so cute when he sleeping, all coiled up with his eyes closed. When he snuggles I’ve noticed that he is warm, on his own, not just from laying in the sun, which he does love to do. Whatever he might be, snake or not, he is my loyal friend and I am lucky to have him with me on the island.”

Once again Tony does a great job coloring, adding so much life and warmth to an already great picture. Ember looks beautiful, the tropical tan of her skin, the red tips of her hair, the greens of her leaves and purple of her flowers, all bring so much vibrance and vitality to her image, along with the incredible shine off of her hair, skin, and her spear, she really stands out in this picture. But her big snaky companion looks brilliantly done as well,… going from white to white might not seem that remarkable, but I feel the colors give him more weight and depth, and that subtle difference in shades between his underbelly and the rest of him shows quite nicely, along with the subtle shine off of his scaly form. But what really stands out are his bright red eyes and purple tongue, which I think really add to his personality and cuteness. All in all, a great compliment to an already fantastic picture, properly showcasing Ember's big, scaly, buddy, Ozzy.
