Sometimes older kids pick on younger ones just because they watch cartoons.And what a drama it is when someone tells them that anime is a cartoon,too.

I agree that anime is like more for teenagers,it can be cruel and bloody.
But it's still a cartoon,even if it's japanese.
In Japan anime is just a shortening of animation.
So just shut up about all this "anime is not cartoon" thing.

I use the word "anime" forΒ differentiate the japanese animation of the american (or canadian, etc.) cartoon. But both are "dibujos animados" (spanish expression for cartoon, means lit. animated drawing).
Really I dislike the otaku people who dabble with Western cartoons.

I'm just kidding. I agree somewhat with you. I believe that cartoons are for kids, and I don't think anime is for kids. I mean, there are animes like Lucky Star that are appropriate for kids, but otherwise, it's for teens and adults.

Sorry, if I sound a little blunt, but that's a pretty controversial thing to say, I can't help but to somewhat disagree with you. I think what you meant to say is 'Anime is just another form of animation'. The art style, themes, and target audience are pretty distinct for either case. Don't get me wrong, I like both Anime and Western animation(aka cartoons as most people refer tend to them as), each have their own strengths and weaknesses. But if I were you, I'd use the more ambiguous term 'animation' to avoid offending either sides.

I love anime but not some of the fans -__- Some of them get all huffy when you try to tell them it literally translates to 'Japanese cartoon', even Japanese fans consider it cartoons or same for Korean anime it means 'Korean cartoon' there's really no difference besides the art style that is. Anime IS a cartoon whether you agree or not agree. Plus not all anime is serious either before anyone uses that: There are animes with little to no plot just like American cartoons can be.

I use to think I love anime alot, then I realised I am following way more cartoon comics than anime's...
I can't help it! I was brought up with cartoons, I guess it was the beauty of anime that caught me...

Well, there are hundreds different cartoon styles, and anime is one of them. (I personally prefer western cartoons like Looney Tunes and Disney, but I won't deny that in the end it's all cartoon, no matter if it's western or Japanese.)

The difference (and the reason why I like to state the diference) is that only 10% of animes are for kids, 45% is for teens and 45% for adults.
Cartoons are almost 100% limited to children, because everything else seems unthinkable!

those are all amazing shows that are made mainly for an older audience.

i agree but i love how everyone is saying american cartoons have no plots. hasn't anyone ever watched justice league, batman, superman even new superhero cartoons. ben 10, genrator rex they all have set plots and a lot less filler than animes (okay not ben 10). some animes can go one for hundreds of episodes without even gaining a true plot!
and anime style isn't that great. most of it is out of proption and way to bright. lots of american cartoons have beautiful art styles! and i know this i've watched more than enough of both!

Very true, yes. I also agree that many will often get very pissed about this topic as well and go apeshit weeaboo all over it. But I must say it is much easier to keep track with differing Anime from Cartoons because they are from separate cultures. Example, say 'anime'. What comes to mind? Spongebob Squarepants or Dragonball Z? Just sayin...

Like you said anime just means cartoon in Japanese, it's funny because if you go on popular Japanese websites like NicoNicoDouga they still call cartoons like Foster's Home, Power Puff Girls, South Park, MLP etc "Anime"
So I really don't see why everyone gets so upset when you call an anime "cartoon", it's pretty much the same thing.

anime is the term that americans use for Japanese shows or the animated version of manga. cartoons are used for western shows and barely any are based on books. when someone calls anime cartoons they are wrong in the way that anime is eastern. when somebody calls cartoons anime they dont know what anime means. true that another main difference is the art style, but that same difference makes them how different spongebob is to a live action show. also just saying, if someone called a cartoon you watch anime, wouldn't you agree

cartoon is also a proper term for it though. i personally refer to it as anime because it's a more widely used term, but they're all cartoons. we have a japanese foreign exchange student and i was hanging out with her the other day and we watched family guy, which she called an anime. they're all the same thing.

Because it does, I don't really need a reason, it's just one of the things that really get on my nerves. Like people who pronounce Manga, 'Main-ga', it's just stupid. And I just plain hate it when people don't call something just what it is. Anime is called anime where it comes from, so I call it anime, not a cartoon. Like Kilts; In Scotland they're called kilts, not skirts. Or togas for example. Togas aren't dresses, they're togas.
And majority of the cartoons these days in the US are horrible or just boring with absolutely no storyline whatsoever, at least that's what I think.

Because you're pretty much saying all cartoons are awful compared to anime. I wondered if you knew some good animated films. Not to mention films like show white are the ones who influenced early anime creators. A lot of them were interested into.American animation. Heck, American animation was in its prime during the time.
I myself don't like anime and I prefer American animaton but really anime does equal cartoon It's animation such as cartoons are. They usually have different plots but anime is short for animaton.

I never said that and I will admit there are cartoons I like, just like there are anime's I don't like.
I generally don't like a lot of old cartoon movies, not counting Iron Giant (it was pretty amazing when I was younger, but so were a lot of other things, so Iron Giant might not be as good as I thought it was)
There are PLENTY of GOOD animations I like, such as Paprika or Spirited Away. Which are both animated in an anime style, but they are good. I also liked The Princess and the Frog, and Tangled (yeah, I know, childish, but I loved them and they're the first 'cartoony' movies I thought of that I liked)
If you don't like anime, then there's no reason for me to continue this conversation, because obviously neither of us will change our opinion.
It's not that I particularly don't like cartoons, there are lots of cartoons I like, it's just a lot of them I don't like.
Just because Anime means animation, does not mean it means cartoon.
If your sole reason for calling anime a cartoon is because anime means animation, that's extremely stupid.
Also, why don't you like anime? Is it the style or what? I DO like some cartoons, it's not like I'm saying they're all awful. There are lots of good cartoons, just like there are lots of good animes.

It's mostly the art style that bothers me a lot. I don't hate all anime however. I've seen anime that I generally liked and I went past the style. Expect the art style generally bothers me like I said.
