Description
The warehouse looked the same as any other on the water front, there was nothing to tell even the keenest observer that this building was a front for one of the most successful human trafficking outfits the world had ever seen, and the sorceress Alchemica was a very keen observer indeed. But, if the police woman who had contacted her discreetly was to be believed, this warehouse was the head quarters of the infamous White Lotus and her gang. This was the place Alchemica's missing team mate Miss Martial was being held.
Alchemica snorted in frustration. She hadn't been here a month yet and she was already beginning to hate this city. Super City, it sounded like the place a heroine would feel welcome, but peel back the shiny tinfoil packaging and this city was rotten to the core. But perhaps there was still a chance she and the other members of the Trinity could make a difference. There were good people here; the frightened police officer who had risked her job to give her this tip was proof of that.
Well, she had the information she needed, time to act. If only she had been able to contact En-Trance, but the Shadow Siren wasn't answering her phone. Hopefully she was okay, most likely she was. En-Trance could take care of herself, and of all of them she seemed the most at home here. One problem at a time, Alchemica thought to herself. Rescue Miss Martial first, then worry about En-Trance.
Alchemica scanned the building once more. There, a side entrance, one camera and no guards visible. Alchemica knew they were there though, out of sight so as not to draw attention. Getting in probably wouldn't be a problem, but getting to Miss Martial would be a whole other ball game. "Well, White Lotus, the game it seems is afoot..." Alchemica whispered aloud as she raised her hands. Words of magic fell from her lips like liquid music as she cast a spell to lock the camera into a feedback loop. Then, using her sorcerous powers she opened a portal and crossed the intervening distance with a single step. Spells filling the air with the melody of her magic, the mighty Alchemica disarmed the door alarms and stepped inside. The game was on indeed.
The main floor yielded nothing. The odd fool with a gun or a worker who took dirty money made from the sale of women to fund their miserable lifestyles. A word of power froze them in place; will versus will there was no one here to match Alchemica. She simply overpowered them with contemptuous ease and after questioning them moved on, leaving them frozen helplessly in place. Finally, she made one of the rats squeak. He told her that most likely Miss Martial was in the holding area, a converted basement turned into a dungeon to hold women as they awaited shipment.
With an angry toss of her head Alchemica put him to sleep and stormed off in the direction of the dungeon. Her magic radiated out from her in waves, visibly distorting the air about her as she summoned her full power. The dungeon was bound to hold a tougher test of her abilities, but she was Alchemica she was the champion of Avalon, the leader of the Trinity, will and power incarnate and she was pissed! No one was going to stand in her way.
Reaching the door Alchemica abandoned subtlety. A wave of her hand and a word sent the door slamming backward, shattered by her power. Alchemica stepped through and paused. Several expressionless masked faces looked upward in her direction. The demonic faces of Oni mercenaries, White Lotus famed body guards. Each of them was a master of martial arts, which they combined with other quasi mystical abilities. One of them would be a serious threat, but Alchemica counted at least six masks peering up at her. A tougher test indeed!
The sorceress sprang forward, weaving multiple strands of magic together, and took the fight to them. They reached for her, attempting to drag her down. If any one of their reaching hands had touched her, Alchemica knew she was done for. Their physical strength, combined with their knowledge of the many vulnerable nerve points on her body would end her rescue quickly. But to beat her they would have to touch her, and the Angel of Avalon gave them no opening. She became a tornado of eldritch strength, blowing through them as if they were stalks of wheat in a field. When she finally ceased her song, the Oni were the ones defeated, laying on the ground at her feet in various states of pain and consciousness.
Alchemica chose one who seemed to have the most life left in him and planted one booted foot squarely on his chest. She looked down at him, beautiful but cold, as her magic flared from her hands with the promise of incalculable pain should he deny her what she wanted.
"Where is Miss Martial? Where is White Lotus?" Alchemica demanded. "You have five seconds before the pain begins..."

Awesome start to the series and I really like the way you described her magic and action. It also appears that there are a pair of boots on at the top of the stairs that look suspiciously like White Lotus's boots. Perhaps she is just waiting for the right moment to announce herself.

Everything is happening as it has been foreseen, Alchemica may be mistaken though if she believe it is unfolding according to her plan. This isn't Kansas, that is for sure

Great opening. I like the way her spellcasting is described. Very fluid.
I also like how you explained, without being obvious or over explaining, why the Onis didn't draw their Swords of Overkill.
Awesome start to the series.

Thank you...I also take pride in the fact for once I managed to keep a story under 900 words
Sometimes you work backward. A kind of application of Chekov's rule...in the image the swords are not drawn, so there must be a reason and you find that reason...and then find a way to (try) slip it in without drawing too much attention to it.
I think the talks we have had and the initial image of the Oni mercenary you showed me helped too, they had a more than mere men vibe to them...
Plus there is practicality, unless a certain Dr Lecter is on her client list I am sure Lotus prefers her guards to take captives that are in one piece

The dude that's buried by copier paper. LOL. I don't know why, but every time I look at that I think how stupid and awesome it was to put plain old copy paper in the scene.

Well it is awesome but it isn't stupid...little touches like that add to the world building. People store stuff all over the place irl and if this is near the "shipping" department I am sure there are some kinds of invoices etc required
