The woman known as Candi Comet and the man who calls himself The Clamp are two notorious thieves and kidnappers who began their careers on the Pacific coast and whose life of crime has slowly taken them toward the east coast of America.

While their thievery is easily understood, their abductions are a mystery to the police as the victim, most often an attractive woman though sometimes an athletic man, are released without harm or ransom being paid. Interviews with the victims have failed to shed further light on the reason behind the abductions, as the victims are unable to recall any but the vaguest details of what happened while they where prisoners of the duo.

But who are Candi Comet and The Clamp behind their masks?

Tara Palmer was a nanny for a wealthy family in the greater Los Angeles area. One night , while her charges slept and their parents were at some social event Tara snuck into library and snooped around for something valuable and small she would be able to pawn to help pay her college tuition. Something that might not be missed for sometime, something small. Tara was disappointed however. While many of the books looked but old and valuable, she knew that the absence of a volume would soon be noticed. She was just about to leave empty handed when something pushed back atop one of the large book shelves caught her eye. Standing on a chair to reach it Tara found a small wooden chest in her hand. The casket was dusty, the metal hinges rusted. Tara doubted that anyone had held it as she did now for many years. Walking back out into the main living area she stashed the small chest in her jacket pocket and waited for her employers to return.

That night in her room, Tara rubbed sweaty palm against her jeans as she tried to work up the resolve to open the casket. A nagging voice was telling her to return it to where she found it, but another voice whispered in her mind, one that spoke of the possibilities that might lay inside. Tara slowly opened the lid and peered inside, then made a small sound of disappointment. Inside the chest she had indeed found gold, but it was the worthless gold of a lock of hair. Tara tipped the hair onto her hand, and felt a sudden surge of energy flow through her, a jolt that put her sprawling on her back atop her bed covers, unable to move and aware that she was not alone.

Above her stood a hauntingly beautiful woman, or the ghost of one as Tara could see through the apparition, a woman with golden hair, a seductive smile and leathery wings that seemed to stretch from wall to wall and engulf the room in darkness.

The apparition spoke to Tara, mind to mind, and offered her a deal. Tara would be granted a great gift, powers that would insure she could steal enough to pay for her tuition and more...wealth unimaginable. All she had to do was , from time to time, steal for the woman before her, and there would need to be a down payment. Images flashed in Tara's mind, of her surrounded by wealth, everything she could have wished for. The temptation was too much for the young woman and she agreed to the deal, and so Candi Comet was born...

Candi Comet enjoyed a successful career as a thief. As the money flowed into her hands, college began to loose its appeal. College was boring, stealing was fun. And if occasionally she stole something else, less tangible but no less valuable well...her gifts allowed those thefts to go undetected. As time passed however, Candi Comet found herself needing to steal more and more for her benefactor, or else her powers began to fade. Candi began to realize that her wish might not be all she had thought at first, but before she could do more than think about looking for a way out of her deal, she ran into the hero known as Long Arm and everything changed again.

Frank Longwell was a hero multiple times over with a long history of service to his country. He enlisted at a young age, excelled in training and performed his duties in exemplary fashion. Frank impressed his superiors, and was recruited into a special ops team, one that specialized in working behind enemy lines. It was while on one of those missions Frank met the creature, the "Desert Ghost" as he calls it. Frank never knew whether he and his team just stumbled upon the creature accidentally, to whether it had been set to hunt them. It didn't matter, hunt them it did, stalking Frank's team through the desert as they tried to reach their extraction point, killing them one by one until at last only Frank was left.

Alone, desperate, Frank turned and fought instead of running. The creature was incredibly strong, but so was Frank. In fact Frank was baseline Enhanced, his strength and endurance at the peak of human ability. The two tussled in the desert night with only the stars as witness until dawn came. As the sun rose, the creature weakened. Frank took the opportunity, and when at last he stood to gaze up at the sun, he stood alone. Frank Longwell had avenged his comrades, the creature was dead.

Frank's superiors never fully believed his story. They suspected Frank was suffering from dehydration and PTSD from losing his team. They promoted him to a desk, still calling on his expertise for planning, but Frank never went into the field again. Three years later, Frank was honorably discharged with a healthy retirement package and sent home to L.A.

Frank was not the sit at home type however, and he was still relatively young, fit and eager to help people. He tried to join one of the Government agencies, but was refused. Next he tried local law enforcement, but that door was shut to him too. Frustrated, but unwilling to give up, Frank joined a private security firm, one that provided event planning and security to the rich and famous. The job paid well, it kept Frank active and he didn't need the paycheck. Every Hollywood cent Frank earned he gave to worthy causes. It was while working an event that Frank discovered that he had gained a strange power as well as beyond human endurance. Deciding that this would be a better way to help people, Frank quit his job. Making himself a costume, the 53 year old went out and fought crime as a costumed hero. Pretty soon the press dubbed him Long Arm, as in the Long Arm of the law. Frank liked the name and adopted it as his own.

A few years later, Long Arm used his powers to aid him in catching the notorious thief Candi Comet. As Cabdi struggled to escape, Long Arm read the thief her rights and prepared to call the police. He never made that call. Three months later Frank Longwell's boat sunk in a storm, his body was never recovered. Soon after that Candi Comet reappeared joined by a new companion. he called himself...The Clamp!
