And I can imagine that is difficult... my own family members are a little more theologically conservative than I am in certain areas, but they have never been hateful or hurtful... so I'm not entirely sure what advice to give about that.

Mine, too. But things that they are conservative in are very important for me. For example, the don't want me to get a piercing (I'm sixteen and in that age piercings are legal in my country) that I really love and that helps me to express myself and with which I feel more confident, they hate the music that I listen to, and they do not want me to belong to any subcultures...
