Description Hello, here's an easy skirt to make.

A: You will need a rectangle of fabric and 1 inch wide elastic, thread and a safety pin.
The usual fabric width is 45 inches (check when you buy, as you will need about twice your waist size to give a full skirt and room to walk), eg. waist 22 inches then a 45inch width will be plenty. It depends how long you need the skirt as to how much to buy, for a short one, half to three quarters of a yard will do. Don't forget to allow extra for hems and top edges.

B: Sew the selvedges together (these are the self finished edges on fabric at the sides). So now you have a tube with raw edges top and bottom.

C: Turn over the raw edge (to the inside) to make a a channel that will be wide enough to hold your elastic. Leave a gap to enable you to thread elastic through.

D: I always stitch another row close to the top edge -you don't have to do this but it makes it look more professional and finishes the top nicely. (You can see the gap for threading elastic too)

E: Attach the safety pin to the end of elastic and thread through - adjust it comfortably to your waist size and join the two ends together (take care to keep the elastic flat in the channel - if it twists it can be uncomfortable). I sew mine with lots of stitches so it won't pull apart - you don't want to lose your skirt!!

F: This is the finished waist channel showing part with the "top stitching" and part without. I think the top stitching just finishes it neatly. The part without top stitching stays baggy and the elastic can move where it will.

All you need do now is put the skirt on and hem it to your chosen length. Turn the raw edge inside neatly, pin,sew and press.

I have tried to explain as best I can, if you need help, please feel free to contact me.

Apologies for poor quality photes!!
