Description
Naruto gently rocked back and forth, soothing the crying form folded up in his arms. He never expected to be in this kind of position, trying to consol the tattered soul of his greatest friend and comrade, the one who was most like himself. He nuzzled his face into the soft, short hair and muttered comforting nothings.
Slowly, the crying slowed into broken breaths. The hands that had left bruises on Naruto’s back now relaxed and curled into a more comfortable position at Naruto’s waist. A shuddering sigh, and all was silent.
“See?” Naruto whispered into the shell-pink ear. “They were there for you, just like you are for them...” There was a pause. “Just like I’m here for you.”
Azure blue eyes met sea-green ones as the tear-stained face turned to face Naruto.
“Always?” the voice croaked, daring him to promise the impossible.
“Come on, I’m only human!” Naruto chuckled at his joke. He brought his hand up and caressed the feverishly-hot cheek. “I’ll visit as often as I can. I am a shinobi, I’ll always have missions.” He nuzzles their noses together. “But even if I’m not here in body…” a soft kiss on chaste lips. “I’ll always be with you. Just think of me, and I’ll be there.”
Hands entwined in his, with a grip that promised to never let go.
“I… never doubted you.” The other faced away. “But they…I never thought they would…be there for me…”
Naruto strengthen his grip around his friends’ waist.
“They just needed to see that you weren’t the psychopath that people seem to see you as.”
Snort.
“You still don’t know me well, do you, Uzumaki?” The green eyes returned to Naruto’s face.
Naruto grinned, his sunny, no-problems-in-the-world grin.
“True. But I can’t wait to get better acquainted.”
He landed another kiss on the virgin lips. There were a few moments as the other drunk in this new feeling.
“I can promise you this.” Naruto whispered on borrowed breath.
“What?”
Naruto stopped and gripped the face before him in both hands.
“You will always be loved, Gaara.”
Gaara was still for a moment. Slowly, ever so slowly, he broke out into his first true smile in years.
“And will you be the one to love me?”
“Yes.” Naruto drew Gaara into a rib-breaking hug. “I love you. And I always will. Always.” Gaara brought his arms around Naruto’s neck, softly. Nothing but sand and wind could be heard in the room, until there was a whisper that almost escaped Naruto’s keen hearing.

“I love you too.”
