Description

Nanbankuo ( Japanese: 南蛮国, "State of Southern Barbarians") is a puppet state of the Empire of Japan in Australia.
For about 60,000 years before the first British settlement in the late 18th century, Australia was inhabited by indigenous Australians, who in documented times have spoken languages classifiable into roughly 250 groups. After the European discovery of the continent by Dutch explorers in 1606, Australia's eastern half was claimed by Great Britain in 1770 and initially settled through penal transportation to the colony of New South Wales from 26 January 1788. The population grew steadily in subsequent decades, and by the 1850s most of the continent had been explored and an additional five self-governing crown colonies established. On 1 January 1901, the six colonies federated, forming the Commonwealth of Australia. Australia has since maintained a stable liberal democratic political system that functions as a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy comprising six states and several territories. The Australian Campaign of 1942-44 was the conquest of the Commonwealth of Australia by forces of the Empire of Japan during the Pacific Campaign of World War II. Australia was partitioned along the 18th parallel, with the north occupied by imperial forces and the south granted autonomy as Nanbankuo.

The Japanese were benevolent dictators, retaining the commonwealth style of government which had been in place from before the invasion. The Japanese did not seek to annex Australia. Instead, after the war Nanbankuo became a destination for resettlement of the former European colonists. Those of pure or partial European ancestry were relocated to Nabankuo from Japan’s colonial conquests in Asia and the Pacific. Today most of Nanbankuo's population are bilingual, speaking English and Japanese. Because of this, most of Japan's international trade and diplomacy is performed in Nanbankuo.

The name of the country Nanban (南蛮, "southern barbarian") is a Sino-Japanese word. In Japan it came to designate the Portuguese, who first arrived in 1543, and later other Europeans. As Australia's population largely originates from Europe from the Age of Discovery, they are likewise referred to as Nanban.

Any weebs fluent in Japanese? The character 国 can be pronouced "Goku" or "Kuni" according to the internet, but apprently it can be pronounced "kuo" also? I'm no sure what the proper pronunciation is.

I made it "kuo" because the Japanese called the Manchurian puppet state "Manchukuo."
