Submission for the AlternateHistoryHubBonus army and August Regime (1932)
The Bonus Expeditionary Forces, lead by Walter W. Waters, stormed the White House on July 28th, 1932, establishing a military junta. These disgruntled veterans were unsatisfied with the Hoover Administration's bonuses in the form of certificates they could not redeem until 1945. The principal demand of the Bonus Army was the immediate cash payment of their certificates.
The military coup was successful and after one month of a provisional government the new regime, named the American State, was founded August 28th, 1932. The conspirators were inspired by the widespread political revolutions across the world at this time. The American State redistributed the wealth of the country to the armed forces and veterans. Those who wish for freedom and opportunity must enlist in the military, or else die penniless. While the government did not enforce conscription, the rising poverty and famine in the country lead to 72.43% of the population enlisting into the military, in total 94 million people.
The new government was not representative, so the state level of government was abolished to make way for a single-state, known simply as the State of America. Rather than having state representatives, the government was composed of military personnel, representing different divisions in the military. The American State is a self-proclaimed Meritocracy, a government in which power should be vested in individuals exclusively based on ability and talent. The Committee of National Interest is the successor to the Senate and House of Representatives, and is composed of elected officials. The President of the United States is elected solely by this Committee, who have elected Walter W. Waters, the leader of the revolution, as president for six consecutive terms.
The Alaskan Insurgency and World War II (1932-1944)
Not every state was keen on giving up their sovereignty. The territory of Alaska, separated from the continental United States by Canada, seceded from the Union and established the Free State of Alaska, or F.S.A, two days after the inauguration of the American State. The American State requested military access from Canada, but was rejected, as the Canadian Confederation supported Alaska's sovereignty and disliked the new American administration. After an embarrassing naval defeat at the hands of the Alaskans the American State resorted to a land invasion of Canada. The war ended in British victory, and the independence of Alaska in 1936. Alaska was granted a referendum whether to join the Canadian Confederation, but declined.
In 1940, however, Nazi Germany was at war with Great Britain, and with the British preoccupied with Europe, the Americans could easily conquer Canada and Alaska in a sweeping victory. The United States joined the Axis Powers in July 1940, following the surrender of France to the Nazis. The second land invasion of Canada was better organized and easier to manage due in part to the British Empire's dispersed army. The war ended in four months, with Canada capitulating provided they were granted some autonomy under the American occupation. As a result most of Canada and all of Alaska was annexed, and the Eastern provinces were merged into an American puppet-state. Nazi Germany manages to conquer the British Isles and holds dominion on all of Europe, leaving the world under five spheres of influence: The Third Reich, The Italian Empire, The Empire of Japan, The Soviet Union and the American State.
Post-War Era (1944-1980)
In 1944 the Canadian Deportation Act was passed by the Committee of National Interest, a law which saw the relocation of 11 million Canadians from lands annexed by the American State to land permitted by the government for settlement. This pale of settlement, known as the Protectorate of Canada, was composed of Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. In 1961 Norwegian archaeologist Helge Ingstrad discovered Norse settlements in Newfoundland. The Nazi Regime used this discovery as propaganda of Newfoundland and Greenland as true Nordic, Aryan lands. To commemorate this the German Canadian Territories were renamed to Erika, in memory of Leif Erickson, the first discoverer of the Americas.
Today the American State is 5,908,875 sq.mi, about 38% larger than the real-world United States.
