Oh yes, far to much Victorian Sci Fi.. its all part of another concept, sort of a 'What If' scenario surrounding War of the Worlds.

i never got along with victiorian scifi stories... i would imagine its the same reason that id expect that people wont get along with star wars n star trek in a hundred or so years time... its FAR too dated.

the oldest scifi i like is Philip K Dick, who wrote in the 60s, he came up with some brilliant concepts, but didnt do say much of the actual technology, which makes his stoies much longer lasting (he wrote books such as Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep (Blade Runner), The Man on High Castle (about what US woulda been like if the Nazis had won) and verious short stoies including Minority Report and the story that resulted in the creation of Total Recal)

Ah well, we all have our ikes ad dislikes! I just wanted to see what would happen with the Martian situation if the Victorians had been a tad different.
