eyes can "cry out" in many different waysthere are lots of "veil" images - and i think many women often romantice the use of a veil as sensual or fantasy - and of course recent history has brought a lot more somber connections to the use of veils in some cultures
my point is - its a common theme i realize - and i personally think the best i've seen on DA is here [link]
but this is mine - i too like to play with all the womanly connections i feel inside of me to women in this world, as well as to fantasy - good and bad
so here is mine - its purposely a bit gritty and dark - it goes with my ideas of how it makes me feel to feel covered up or stifled - no matter how beautiful i find the veil to be at the same time - its a strange thing actually, but one thing i know for sure - the eyes never lie

I really like the use of a red veil. The color makes me think of will power and courage - to either accept this situation and make the best of it or to secretly plan and fight against it. And relating it to the title, and our how many things can have such different meanings - it makes me think of fire and smoke... how fire can be seen as warmth and it can have such a beautiful glow, just as we can fantasize about flowing veils and scarves... but then fire and smoke can also suffocate us and kill, the way these veils keep woman quiet and subserviant.
And yet, as I look at that anxious stare I can think about how woman who wear such garb, must really have so much power over the expressions and the truth they let out or hide within their eyes.

i think a lot of misconception also arises about the veil in certain cultures - a lot of people, particularly in western countries who do not understand it, often view it as a form of female/feminine oppression. but it is also a choice, and also the beliefs of those cultures. while it is true that in some instances there is a lot of femine abuse and oppression, the veil really doesn't have anything to do with it. it's something far more ingrained than a mere costume.

The darkness in this and the blood red of the scarf and the look in your eye .. its absolutely captivating, dragging my eyes back again and again without my conscious mind doing so.
Facinating work honey, so many things in this .. opression (voluntary with the way your hand is holding the scarf and involuntary with the silent screem in your eye), beauty and a sheer screaming silence in this.

its funny you bring up voluntary yet still desperate - you know after 9/11 they had this image of an arab woman removing her veil "for the first time" and i remember thinking she looked scared - not so "yeah -f reedom" you know? and even if they WANT to be "able" to remove it- just think how in ways it was a safety thing - like a feeling of security, a blanket to shut out the horror - i could see how if it were forced up on you for so long - that taking it off might feel very very scary you know?

The red is very powerful and I really think it communicates the complexity of the veil. It's got a very interesting history, and I think a discussion about its meanings is really relevent and interesting (might make a good poem). Your work so often makes me want to pursue photography--there are so many themes to contemplate.
This is a strong image. It's bold and dark, it's thoughtful and throught-provoking.
