Description
One of the best villains in the entire series, gets at least the silver medal for that.
A lot of people completely miss the point about Cell ; you're not supposed to compare it to its predecessors, it isn't a guy or a tyrant, it is a sapient weapon.
It was a great change for the series and had all the elements of a final boss ( I think people would appreciate it more if it were the last story-arc) :
- Unlike the other bosses ( King Piccolo, Vegeta , Freeza ...) , it had to work its way out to obtain its full abilities and managed to pay tribute to their abilities and the threat they've brought in their time; Cell was the right consequence that both protagonists and antagonists contributed in forging. And unlike them, it could have been killed by anyone who would have met it (with a shotgun) in larval form ... Also it is the first non-male villain , it never refers to itself as someone but as someTHING : supreme being, creation, achievement, perfect warrior , ultimate weapon ... this element is fundamental to its characterization since Cell is completely indifferent to human notions.
- Imperfect Cell was basically a talking xenomorph www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewQi8N… . And it clearly is a lot of artists favorite form since a lot of them love depicting realistic versions of it....
- Semi-Perfect Cell ( actually Toriyama's favorite stage) might be a loud thug, but it is a manipulative loud thug, besides it is way too easily underestimated. Under the right artist and expression , it can look terrifying though ...
- Perfect Cell is a breath of fresh air for a major villain ; unlike the egomaniacal vast conquering baddies, it is mostly a childlike being that sees its surroundings as toys (that it is not all that concerned about breaking though... messy little kid.). And as for motivation ? IT IS A CREATURE/WEAPON , not a person per say ! I don't see anyone bashing Godzilla for wrecking cities or the Terminator for... well... terminating people. Thing is Cell just decided to have fun with it ; what do you think a sapient gatling gun would do in its spare time?That is actually the (rather dark) joke ; a polite mass-killing bio-weapon that is motivated by trick-or-treat shennanigans invites the entire planet to fight it in a tournament ! It sounds like a threat to the entire earth , but to Cell it is a courteous invitation. www.youtube.com/watch?v=cZA920…
That sums up Cell ; from horror movie monster to apocalyptic hedonist ... An interesting story ! And it DID work !

I know you've said you've read DB over and again, and you're probably right about gender despite it being alive. It just feels weird to refer to Cell as if an inanimate object, and people tend to refer to Cell as male I think because the constituents were male (except for maybe the lizard folk).
Something many don't realize is his "ki signature". When he first appears, everyone's sensing everyone, all at one location. As the story moves on, they move to just referring to Cell's signature as his own, like everyone else. Did it change after all his absorptions? Who's to say!

I see what you mean, it's just that the pronoun IT brings out the "monster/ creature/abomination" vibe that is Cell. It makes it different from the other villains who could at least you can somewhat reason with . But with Cell ? It was made to kill and LOVES killing.
I think that they got used to it. When they sense many people at the same location, they guess quickly that it is Cell .

I've also read that Frieza is considered the best villain of the series and Cell and Buu are not considered as a real villains. Mainly because Freezerwas the emperor of the universe, conquered and destroyed many planets. He was all a dictator. Instead they says that Cell and Buu were not true villains like Frieza because Cell never did the same things that Freezer (despite having their cells), never to conquer or destroy the earth (Cell said that with a Kame Hame Ha it could even destroy the solar system). he evil was only for fun, not to subject anyone or be dictator as was Frieza. And in the case of Buu, he was destroying everything in its path without any reason for being pure evil and because he was a crazy (say the people that do not consider it as good a villain as Freezer), have not the ability to reason (does not have as Kid Buu, though as Super Buu if, thanks to Fat Buu was part of their essence). And another reason is because both were created by science (Cell) or magic (Buu), not born naturally as Frieza. But that has little to do with the rationale to being a villain.
But I think that if Cell is a good villain nonetheless. And all the villains have different plans for his life of evil and should not always be to conquer the world or something (although most of the villains of all series want this). Cell is a different kind of villain

I've heard people claim how Cell is the best villain in the series. I've heard people worship him as a villain and a character. I.......just don't see it. Or more accurately it's not that I don't see it, I just don't like him that much, and I don't know why.
Judging him from an objective point of view I can see all the good stuff about him - he's basically the combination of so many things throughout Dragon ball which works as the final villain of the story. Being created as revenge for the defeat of the Red Ribbon army. Being created from the cells of so many powerful heroes and enemies having all of their abilities meaning the heroes would have a hard time surprising him. Holding the final battle as a callback to the Martial Arts Tournaments in Dragon ball. Being the only villain (besides Piccolo) to kill Goku and being defeated by his son. It all has the sense of the final villain and by all accounts I should like him because of that, but I just don't for some reason. Maybe his personality, maybe because I wasn't interested in his arc so much after the Freeza arc ended, maybe because it doesn't have the same scale and drama that the Feeza saga had? I don't know.
Even so, I can't deny that I did like his Imperfect form at least, and that, despite my opinion, he WAS well written as an actual villain and threat.

I cannot speak for everyone but myself : The reason I love it is due to its innovative concept and the fact that it is the opposite of Freeza, both in arc and character.
As I said before , the Cyborgs story-arc is my favorite for several reasons : Cell itself of course (and the fact that it is a rather funny monster in hindsight ! Perfect Cell is pretty much an evil primadonna version of Bugs Bunny !) , but also Vegeta becoming a decent person, Trunks learning that while he can't change the past he can find what's in him to improve the future , Gohan showing what his inner monster looks like and Goku finally BITING IT.
The Namek arc gets the silver medal but both sagas and their main bosses could not be more different. Namek's main character is actually Freeza ; it's about HIS ambition , HIS fault and HIS punishment finally striking him, more of a fable than a manga about just fighting really ; and the heroes are the ones who interfere with his operations. The Cyborgs's main protagonist are the Z-team (so to speak) themselves ; THEY all had a hand in creating Cell in a way, and once again it is a story about survival both for the Z-team and Cell itself .
In terms of scale and drama they're equal ; it is just that both arcs are an anti-thesis of each other , much like Freeza and Cell are Long-term ambition VS disinterested hedonism.
Cell is more amoral than it is villainous really; but then again who would bother speak about morals to a walking H-Bomb ?
