Description
Up until one week ago, I mostly knew Rambo through parodies. Sure I've heard about what the first flick was about but...DAMN, I didn't know what I was getting into ! Morrell's novel and Kotcheff's movie were both fantastic . I'd say their differences are what make both versions of the story and their takes on Rambo. And yes, much as I love the novel's tragedy, I perfectly understand why Stallone changed the final scene of the movie. The main difference between both Rambos starts exactly at the Police Station escape : Movie Rambo freaks out and YET struggles throughout the whole movie to maintain a certain mental balance, Book Rambo's psyche utterly breaks from that point on...and there was no coming back for him...As for the melomaniacs in all of us , If this is perfectly fit for the movie www.youtube.com/watch?v=OFiSvI… , THIS is what I had in mind when I was reading the book www.youtube.com/watch?v=CprtVE…

Not surprised that the book was darker. It usually is.

I'd say the movie was more hopeful (Stallone's change was understandable; he didn't want the veterans that get to watch the wrong message.).

I loved the Rambo novel (the "realistic" ending as well) and plan to catch up with the films soon.
Glad to know there's somebody out there who appreciates it, too

Both endings are realistic. It's just that the states of mind of both Rambos are different and so is Teasle. Movie Teasle becomes blinded by a desire of avenging his dead colleague while Book Teasle seems more led by pride (and a death wish by the end).
The Rambo sequels are fine as far as action movies go, but they are a different genre from the first one (which was more of a drama...).

You have a point, it's just that I prefer the book ending, even though it probably wouldn't have worked as well on film

I didn't know a Rambo novel existed! I saw the three Rambo movies and I liked them all but especially the first one. I had no idea there was a fourth one as well so I gotta watch that too sometime

The author of the novel liked the first movie, yet said that the 4th one used the Novel's tone and how he imagined the character; a man disgusted by what he does, but it's the only thing he knows.

I love the Rambo movies, but yeah the general stereotypes around the series only really apply to the sequels which doesn't quite prepare you for how morose the the first one can be. I love his freakout/speech at the end with the Colonel. I've never read the book, but I do know that there's a deleted scene that serves as an alternate ending which stays truer to its ending.

It's true in the sense that Rambo dies , but the way it's done still differs. Stallone changed that because he thought it would send a needlessly fatalistic message to the Veterans who'd watch the film.

They used that deleted scene in the nightmare sequence in Rambo 4 btw. :3
Like, it's just the shot of Rambo making Trautman shoot him, but it works cause it's like what could have been, y'know?

Oh yes it's been a while thanks for reminding me, yeah on one hand I'm glad they didn't do it cause then we wouldn't have the rest of the movies, but on the other it definitely makes sense to the character, especially to where he was mentally/emotionally in the first one.
