WARNING : This is about the greatest Marvel VS DC that will never happen. sad ain't it ?

The common characteristic about both books sis that they are set in the cosmos ! This place where pigs roam free in their rockets and where a lisp-impeded duck destroyed a planet and caused legions (hoho !) of planetary incidents. And also a place where Mars is either the best nudist colony ever or inhabited by psychotic green men with the nastiest of streaks... they even killed Jack Nicholson twice for God sake !

The other common characteristic is that they were both kickstarted by Keith Giffen ! Man I need to draw more ! I need to MASTER his Jose Munoz-rio off style on my terms ! Why am I so fascinated by the 9 panel grid page ?!

Anyway time to adress and compare I suppose... as I am the evil teacher that hits you with the truth, I declare with declaration !

Let's start this fight ! Licensed Extra-Governmental Interstellar Opreative Network VS Guardians Of The Galaxy (from the Giff days...). The team I love drawing yet no one gives a shit about devilkais.deviantart.com/art/L… and the one most of you know from the uninspired sodomized happy meals that are the Gunn movies...
so you don't know them either except you think you do !

THE SETTING:

DC's cosmos (when goddamn lanterns are not hogging it) is honestly waaay more diverse than Marvel's. You got God knows how many species and weird critters to choose and things like "Legion Of Super-heroes" and Omega Men went to town by establishing the planets and the like. There are the New Gods too BUT I've always saw them as belonging to the 4th World dimension rather than straight up aliens. In any case L.E.G.I.O.N. can simply go insane and impredictable thanks to them ALIENS !
Marvel cosmic however is mostly known through Jim Starlin's contributions... and it is kind of its downfall. I know Starlin can write neat stuff, but I am aware of his shortcomings... like turning everyone into patsies to make Thanos and Adam Warlock look good (and GAWD can it be grating !). That and past " Infinity Crusade" his cosmic stuff was just tedious. While I know he has not originated the team we see here, remember that I previously pointed how DnA ended up making the same mistake as him. However, to note its positives, I will add that the memorable critters are indeed awesome.
Point goes to Dox and Co...

THE GENESIS:

L.E.G.I.O.N. started thanks to the okay event "Invasion"... and only the faintest ties to the Legion of Super-heroes (well the 5 years later version since there has been a time-related swap early on... as you do...)
The Guardians here started thanks to Annihilation. So the point goes to them. This is not even up to discussion.

THE FOES:

There are no big names among the L.E.G.I.O.N. antagonists and that IS a good thing ! Because they can surprise the readers through their sheer might and POWER ! I mean we have The computer tyrants of Colu, Dagon-Ra, The Ice Man , Maximillian G'odd , Ig'nea G'odd, Lyrl Dox (for the initial R.E.B.E.L.S series...), Brainiac himself, Starro and his galactic army. Iam aware most of you don't have the foggiest about I'm talking , but doesn't this tempt you to check what it is about ? Cus at worst, the villains are okay.
The Guardians (and Nova, because Ryder BELONGS here !) fought against ; Giffen's Thanos, Annihilus and the Annihilation wave, Ultron and the Phalanx, the Universal church of truth, DnA's version of Adam Magus (SERIOUSLY ! I can't congratulate them enough on making this guy great !), Lord Mar-Vell and the Dire Wraiths. They should win here right ? Nope. "War of Kings" stuck in my damned craw ( why not have Apocalypse in space putting the Inhumans and the Shi'ar against each other instead ?) and Thanos Imperative... the problem is in the fucking title. I stand by this: Phyla-Vell as "Martyr" should have been the one to fight Lord Mar-Vell.
So L.E.G.I.O.N. wins this round

THE DYNAMICS:

Oh this is gunna be gewd ! Cards on table, I LOVE the whole teams ! Even characters I did not give 2 fucks about became among my favorites when they joined either (Starfire and Tinya Wazzo for L.E.G.I.O.N. , Moondragon and Adam Warlock for the Guardians...).
The L.E.G.I.O.N. dynamic goes as such; Vril Dox is the constant (since the line-up is unstable...), and due to daddy issues and ego , he hires himself out as chief of an interstellar police force in the name of justice and the paycheck. Dox is also 2 steps from a genuine Villain protagonist. The other members usually are either used by him or there to clean the mess if his schemes explode on his face. The only exception being the Main Man himself ; LOBO, who's at his absolute best in these books. Lobo is a different kind of evil so it's great to see Dox pull the strings on the last czarnian... said string pulling led at some point to the greatest kiss of the DC Universe static.comicvine.com/uploads/s…
The Guardians however are a strike team of expendables that Peter J. Quill was initially FORCED to lead due to the Phalanx invasion by the Krees (and yes, Ronan aside, those guys are everything you hate about elitism...). After Ultron's defeat , he decides to make it stick. Now, Star-Lord is nowhere near the dick Vril is, right ? No, but... how do I put this ? Imagine if Owen Grady was written by Michael Crichton and you have a sense of his character. He did initially convince Mantis to influence the members he picked for the team. Dick move there man ! But then he hires Jack Flag. Making me the guy with the highest amount of Jack Flag art in his gallery !

This is a tie. I am glad that these teams differ from each other. Though both are looked down on in their respective universes... by editorial too at the time...

THE PUBLICATIONS:

How about highs and lows ?
Well, L.E.G.I.O.N. never had a period that I found awful or anything... even the first R.E.B.E.L.S series was a good read due to its focus on Vril Dox and how he grew as a person. Then Tony Bedard arrived and ... he wrote the BEST DC BOOK of those years. I mean it. It's up there with the Giffen/Alan Grant run on the title.
Guardians was not so lucky a title. The highs were definitely my jam ! Then War Of Kings happened... and then the movie happened and we have shitty abortions that try passing for this great team... whoever felt Kitty Pryde should be a member of the team should be eviscerated...
Dox WINS !

-> Funny thing about Abnett and Lanning. Their run on Legion of Super-heroes is fantastic (and yeah I take Foundations any day over the "Great Darkness saga" ! Bite me fanboys) and I'd say is better than their Guardians' run plotwise. Character-wise though, they did not kill Ultra-Boy, meaning the Guardians WIN characters-wise.
