Description Everything started with a joke and it ended up bringing a shitload of cash ! It is time that we discuss he very original version of the Turtles. Yes , the reptiles that were re-imagined for the 80's cartoon , PERFECTED in the movie and allowed to grow and change in the underrated greatness that is Volume 3.

My first impression upon reading this book is...well... The Turtles start out as very goofy. Just because they are grim and gritty and grinding their teeth does not make them any less campy than some of their later incarnations. The comics really starts with 4 interchangeable vengeful chelonians taught by a vengeful rat that will order them to kill a vengeful dude named after a kitchen tool. Then, a LOOOOOT of crazy stuff happens ! We get sentient robots, triceratops people, Aliens in robotic suits, gang wars , a dude with a hockey mask that beats up delinquents and guest stars ! It is GLORIOUS in the sense that I,KAIS, CRAVE !

But part of why this book works is because its 2 creators have rather different sensibilities and strengths (and weaknesses ).

Kevin Eastman likes gratuitous gore, fast-paced action, gritty urban settings, boobs and cursing . The guy is, by his own admission , a huge fan of Frank Miller ( he has nothing but praise for Daredevil. To me, and from what I read of Miller's run, I'd say that Wilson Fisk is easily the best character in DD ) and he's pretty open when it comes to the various interpretations of the TMNT. Granted there are crappy interpretations (Next Mutation anyone ?) and his excesses can give us stuff like Body Count ( a mini that was so violent it ended up being Booooring !) but hybridist that I am , I am in the same wavelength as Eastman , various visions can actually give characters much more nuances. He is also a co-writer of the current IDW TMNT (which is great BTW )
Finally, he is the editor of Heavy Metal and his favorite characters are Raphael and Casey Jones (guess the first movie must have been his joy !).

Peter Laird , on the other hand , is the consumate Kirby fan (to the point they even have Donatello meet the King ! Guess who's his favorite turtle). The man is more about science fiction, aliens and long arc narratives. Under him , the characters are indeed milder and the stoories are much calmer and about establishing a world rather than fights and action. And unlike Eastman, Laird seems to be faaaar more rigid when it comes to the Turtles. The dude seems to really , reeeeaaaallly hate the 80's cartoon (opinion that I disagree with. Yes the FW cartoon went on for too long but its best episodes are still freaking great ! And FW Shredder > Mirage Oroku Saki . So there ! Also Turtles Forever was mediocre as fuck... It had moments of true brilliance, but it was mostly mediocre.) and as such, he was one to give a lot of input for the next cartoon . On the one hand , TMNT 2003 is brilliant for its first 4 seasons ! It is up there with BTAS as one of the greatest comics distillation ever (even improving upon the source material !) , it is as it stands THE cartoon to surpass (I'd sacrifice an entire forum full of people to whatever malevolent deity there is if my favorite comics storylines could get a similar treatment through animation !From a distillation and technical aspect !). On the other hand, he gave us Mirage TMNT Volume 4 .... Let's forget about that for the moment shall we ?

As for the stories themselves ... This is a bit tricky because the book went through guest writers and even the MAIN story has various annexes and micro-series in-between issues. So, I will mostly focus on the main storyline (besides it is what I drew.). It roughly goes this way from issues 1->14 , 19 ->21 , 24 -> 26 , 45 -> 62 and the Turtles Micro series for each one of the 4 reptiles.

The first phase ( 1 -> 14 ) contains the first fight against the Shredder ... in the first issue... and Oroku dies at that point. Yeah ,as I stated beforehand , the Mirage Oroku Saki is more of a story kick-starter than an actual player in this volume. His legacy and the consequences his death will spawn are far more important than the dude himself. (And it will reach its apotheosis in Volume III ).
But now that I think about it, the Mirage TMNT do not exactly have a memorable Rogues gallery do they ? In fact their deadliest villains are mostly groups, armies and factions like the Triceratons or the Foot Clan. Most of the one-man threats like Shredder or Stockman are dispatched pretty easily. Anyhow, through these issues we get weird hijinks like meeting Renet and Cerebus the Aardvak (who I met in a Spawn issue... BTW, tell me audience, should I read Cerebus ? And where to stop ?), the Fugitoid , the Rat King (who's just a hobo), April and Casey. It ends with our protagonist being exiled from the city .

The second phase (19 -> 21 ) is the "Return to New York" story-arc. While it is great in the comics with the whole "Leo decapitating zombie Shredder", this arc was adapted successfully 2 times ; the last act of the movie and in the 2003 cartoon featuring the first explicit decapitation in a Saturday Morning Cartoon. All in all , it is a pretty good and action-packed arc .

The third phase (24 -> 26 ) is surprisingly not an Eastman/Laird story but a Rick Veitch effort, but it fits so well with the overall tone of their story and features a "Holy Shit" villain. A leech . It proceeded to absorb Raphael's mutagen which in turn made him devolve progressively into a regular Turtle and then turned into the antropomorphic horror known as "Bloodsucker". Granted, the name is not all that original but the disturbing aura of this goddamn thing lets us forgive that . And the best part ? He's not even the most disturbing thing in this story.

Finally we have the "City At War" Story-arc. And it concludes this volume with a bang but not in the way I expected.See, with a title like "City At war", you'd expect the mother of all battles roaming through the entire city ! Actually " At War with themselves" would be a more accurate title because it is really about character development and having the protagonists question themselves :
- Casey comes to face his alcoholism and how his violent tendencies ended up getting way out of hand. And Shadow's adoption was not only a giant tear Jerker, but it is also the greatest and most heroic act Casey will ever do.
- Splinter ends up feeding on rats to survive after following the guidance of the Rat King (who's now a spiritual hobo !) ... Yeah , there's more to it but it's better if you read it for yourself .
- April reassesses how crazy her life has been and goes to see her sister. Only to discover that her dad has passed away ...
- The Turtles finally meet Karai ! And unlike most later incarnations, the Mirage Karai is actually an adult and a mom. And best of all ? She's actually Shredder's boss in the Foot Hierarchy and wants their help to take down the remaining elite that are still faithful to Oroku Saki. And it will cost her her daughter... Yeah , as you can guess , this story-arc is pretty joyful.
- But yeah , what about the Turtles themselves ? Leonardo put it best " I'm unsure ... I would gladly die for him [Splinter]...I don't know if I can give him my life.". The boys will basically question what they have been trained pretty much their entire life to do and how this vengeance was only the start of more problems.
While it ends rather well and with the Turtles being rid of Shredder's shadow (or ARE THEY ?), who would have guessed that a story THIS calm , for a TMNT story, would be such a gripping read ? I did not , and for that I give it what it rightfully deserves : 5/5 ! THIS is Eastman and Laird's Masterpiece and crowning Jewel of their initial run !

While I will always heavily disagree with you on the original Shredder I think you are on point with the fact that the TMNT rouge gallery is pretty weak. Now if you are wondering why I am commenting this late on this old work it is because I just read the Old Man River storyline and was looking up fan art of Bloodsucker when I came across this again. Personally I liked the story but WTF was up with the Druids backstory in fact it is a shame that the TMNT Mirage universe is not more cohesive because think about it.

The Triceratons look like Triceratops.

The Fugitoid comes from a planet of humans

The Druid lived in a prehistoric human civilization on earth.

I mean what if those humans are from a parallel earth and the Triceratons are mutated Triceratops from another parallel earth that was still in its prehistoric stage but got mutated by those futuristic humans wanting to use them as slave labour and the mutated Triceratops later rebelled and that's why the humans and Triceratons hate each other. Then those same futuristic humans might have had a colony in the America of our earth before recorded times but they ended up destroying them self as the Druid recalls. See that was not so hard and Mirage TMNT could do with a bit richer lore. In fact the lore could even be that the TMNT earth is not our earth but yet another parallel earth and by coincidence that earth's history is a best selling comic and cartoons series on our planet.

Also, I guess the Rick Veitch run is kind of a time capsule since in today's day and age all his mystical native American mumbo Jumbo would probably be considered cultural appropriation.

I love the 80's Cartoon and the Archie Comics additions to the enemies ! Bebop, Rocksteady, Krang, and Armaggon are pure WIN !

To me, the Mirage TMNT is just the initial storyline and that's about it. I am very happy some of it was used and fused with the 80's toon for the live movie and even happier for the alternatives AND the Image follow-up (which to me was even better !).

Ain't that true. People bitching about "cultural appropriation" should boycott mangas then XD Cus a fuckton of those were possible with "appropriation" ...

Never read the Archie TMNT comics. Although I think Slash was the best concept to come out of it.

I have to stop reading midway and avoid the comments because IDW hasn't finished republshing the old comics yet, and I certainly don't want any spoiler. But know that you just fuel my frustration for IDW for not republishing the series fast enough...

Yeah, that's weird since City At War was already collected once I think.

Also, there are some enjoyable voice-acted pieces of the better moments from the Cerebus arcs on Youtube. Here is one of them- pretty funny.  www.youtube.com/watch?v=t5CPi1…

I had that Cerebus Spawn crossover story. It's very personal and weird, knowing more about who the creators are and what they stand for.

Artwise, definitely check Cerebus out, as it is top notch most of the time out of every independent comic arc out there. Storywise....well...they get the term 'cerebus syndrome' from this story for a reason. It starts as a cute humorous Conan /Usagi Yojimbo type of parody for the first few issues, then it gets as the upper comment says an EXTREMELY darker, slow, indepth and complicated political fantasy, which VERY heavily draws from then current at the time dated politics, issues and pop culture...so muchhhh of the injokes and caricatures might be interesting, but in a very detached confusing way if you haven't any emotional connections or opinions on things like The Rolling Stones, Margaret Thatcher, Nixon, etc. It still is artistically superior....but mid-way at some point the creator suffers some kind of a LSD breakdown along with a horrible divorce and a religious 'epiphany' all around the same time, and it gets VERYYYYY misogynistic, rambling, philsophically confused, and discombobulated. It can still be an interesting read, if you've the curiousity to see what the slow progression of a 'standard' man's personality into a 'fundamentalist bitter crazy madman' personality is like...seeing his motives and opinions unravel, what caused them and how it deteriorates the friendships with other comic professionals he once had....Every issue the farther and farther you go eventually gets more and more of a longer chunk of monologues and essays about the author's world views and prayer sermons more so than actual comic. If you can HANDLE that insanity, it can still be an interesting experiment, but mostly its one long rabbit hole of bullshit. The comic still does until the end gorgeous backgrounds, great character designs, and MINDBLOWING typography artwork with the speech bubbles, and it has a very influential effect on the way cartoonists handle their own creations and break the fourth wall. If you stick up to the Form/Void arc, you should be okay. I haven't really read very much but what I have is interesting enough visually I'm glad I picked it up.

I'd say Cerebus is worth reading from the beginning at least up to Form and Void.  Although, it's very, very down to earth compared to a lot of the stuff you seem to like.  Starts off as kinda how you saw him in the Turtles crossover, just this kind of anthropomorphic Aardvark in a parody of the sword and sorcery genre.  Turns into a huge meandering Game of Thrones style political talking heads story...  With Groucho Marx as an emperor, Foghorn Leghorn as a kind of deposed albino last-of-his-race type guy (probably self-deluding on most of those points), Keith Richards and Mick Jagger as runaway princes, this character called The Roach that was the inspiration for The Tick (remember that thing in Tick issue 1 where he loses his shit on that bum because the bum says, "What are you supposed to be, some kind of roach or something?"  This was because Tick in the old comics even looks like The Roach)...

It's brilliant before it completely shits its brains around Form and Void, and remains compelling past that, but it's also very slow.  Take that for what it's worth.

Well, Miller at his prime has written a lot of great comics . I myself loved Two Face and the Joker in DKR and his Daredevil (Wilson Fisk FTW !) and the Hartigan story in Sin City. While I know the guy has really fallen from grace, he never pissed me off the way Morrison and his sycophants did.

Okay Thanks <3 ... Have you ever read The Dark Knight Strikes Again, All Star Batman and Robin and Holy Terror? Based on Linkara's reviews (don't know how you feel about him...) alone, they seem to be pretty terrible. Also, do you mean Grant Morrison? The guy who wrote All-Star Superman? Why don't you like him? (just curious...)

devilkais In reply to rulkout1993 [2014-09-09 15:48:25 +0000 UTC]

Well I can tell you this much :
- DKSA is crap both in story and art
- ASBAR is fucking hilarious as long as you don't pay for reading it . And as a crappy Batman Crazy Steve is , I still take him over Morrison's junkie BatGod !
- Yes , Holy Terror is indeed plain old garbage .
Well usually I am fine with Linkara's show except when he starts with the whole 90's or Jason Todd jabs. And there are many times where he just nitpicks ...
You wanna know why ? It's my pleasure to explain then ! devilkais.deviantart.com/journ… (It is mostly in here ! )

Have you read the old comics?  They're in a lot of ways an affectionate parody of his style.  Hell, The Hand -> The Foot.  And did you notice how the Turtles' origin story is pretty much the Daredevil one only with the cannister missing Matt Murdock and bouncing along to shatter a fishbowl with the Turtles in it?

I.... haven't read the old comics. Hell, I'm not even that big a fan of the Turtles (I have seen some episodes of the 2003 cartoon and I think I own a video game about them). But, it is an interesting fact about them Though, I wonder how Eastman and Laird think of current Frank Miller... *ugh*
