Description A while back Boom Studios asked if I could take a stab at some character designs for 3 new books that Stan Lee was "writing". The first one was called "Hybrid" later changed to "Soldier Zero" and probably the idea that made the most sense to me. It's also the only design they went with. The other two books they went with someone else's designs. Which is fine with me. To be honest, I wasn't feeling that they were my best designs. But some of that I blame on the the fact that the source material wasn't blowing up my skirt. Although "The Mechanic" could be a cool secondary character design I guess.

1 out of 3 ain't bad I suppose.

Haha, I would adopt your rejected designs, they look cool to me. Good job on all three. Even if you don't think they're your best, I think they're all pretty sweet! But that's just me, I guess, lol.

it's interesting to see Stan get back into real comics, it definitely feels like he's trying to recreate the majic he had with marvels beginnings. It's nice to see they took your design for Soldier Zero, the book looked pretty good.

Hybrid/Soldier zero is the best designed of the three of them.Other two are also great, but Zero is really unique and mysterious-looking at him makes you wanna see what hides inside this armor.

I was toying on getting soldier zero based on the pin-up art,...Is it common for a company to hire someone other than the main book artist to design the character(s). Jumping on a book that has been started is one thing, but I guess I always assumed the first artist on a book designed everything.

Cool sense of design.

The Mechanic looks like a hi-tech gladiator
that bumped into Snake Plisskin. Don't know why I just thought of that.

The other two characters are great, the color scheme for them fits their personality.

So these are characters that Stan "created" but, at least with Hyrbid/Soldier Zero", the look is 100% Johnson? Great Jack Kirby's Ghost!

I'm getting Lex Luthor vibes from Starborn. Actually it's better than the usual purple and green armour he wears.

Hybrid is cool, looks like a Ben 10 villain... Yes I know you did the designs for that show.

I do not know if this is or isnt the place to ask a question like this. Forgive me if I should not. What are your prices for doing character design? Also I guess before that question I should ask if you do character design for very unknown graphic novel I am working on.

Designs seem cool to me, almost like you were channeling a bit of Kirby in them. Hey, what they don't use, just recycle.

I wondered if you were teaming up with The Man once again when I saw the costume design.
Then I saw that you were doing a variant cover and pretty much guessed it couldn't be a coincidence.

It's funny, I didn't realize it was you. Soldier Zero was the only design that I liked. I would like your other two more if there were more primary colors, I'm old school that way.

Stan Lee is a cheapo idea stealer who claims to have invented the wheel - so what to expect!?

you nailed it with "writing" haha.

Southwark In reply to RalphNiese [2014-11-16 01:45:39 +0000 UTC]

When its comes to the modern comic book industry Stan Lee genuinely did 'Invent the wheel'
Some writers attain notoriety because of one successful character (Bob Kane with Batman for example) Stan Lee created Spider-Man, Daredevil, Iron Man, Hulk, the original X-Men, the Fantastic Four, The Avengers etc. some of the most beloved superhero characters that are still to this day the biggest sellers in the industry.
As for the industry itself, Marvel Comics under Stan's leadership reignited the interest in superhero comic books which were all but dead during the fifties, it was so bad that comic book writers would lie about their occupation because comics were seen in such a bad light.
Stan created the blueprint for almost everything we take for granted in modern comics. He did away with stupid kid sidekicks and perfect idol heroes, his characters had 'realistic' personalities and real world problems which readers could relate to and some even saw their powers as a curse, also he based most of his heroes in New York which made it far easier for them to interact. Stan was also instrumental in giving credit to the people actually making the comics, prior to Stan's involvement writers and artists weren't acknowledged at all, it was Stan who fought to put their names on the covers. Also by creating concepts such as Marvel's merry marching society, giving his colleagues funny nicknames etc. readers started to think of writers and artists as semi-celebrities, combined with the introduction of the letters page readers started to feel like they were part of a community.

Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying that everything he touches is gold and obviously some of his more modern work can seem dated but the fact is he genuinely deserves all the respect and applaud that's given him. Stan Lee has given us many of the industries favourite characters, he put down the blueprint for the modern comic book (To the point of resurrecting the dead art-form) and if it wasn't for him writers and artists wouldn't get the respect and acknowledgement that they do.
