______________

There was little to make out between the smoke and fire, both in sight, sound and smell. There was only panic, only fear as beasts fled from the merciless element. No one seemed to know what to do or how to react. Save for her and her lionesses.

She and the others were familiar with the element, had practiced and coordinated with and without it. Had already experience in using the element for invasion. To strike fear into a pride and people. For battle. It had been what happened in the Valelands, felling the Grassy Peaks and weakening the Whistling Creek pride. Taking land and lions for themselves to prove it could be done. Before they went for the real thing.

That been a couple of years ago. When they contacted some rogues, ones who were dark hearted enough to perform the dark actions but were controllable to not turn it upon their new pride mates. And in agreeing to the Scarring rite all their pride needed to take in so they would not weak like any others. They’d proven their worth and then some with the burning, proven themselves in killing the combative forces and capturing the fleeing ones. As had she and her pride sisters, to prove their endless devotion. It been unpleasant she thought but she had accepted it. Though she had shuddered as she remembered feeling the eradict pulse grow still under her teeth. So different from killing prey though it been in similar execution. That burning in the Vale been about the last time she showed weakness. The last time she let her heart feel something more than this grim determination. And anger.

She kept her eye roaming, to never keeping her head stationary as she tried to see even in places her other eye couldn’t land. The scar was of honor for her pride, one of the most honored. But it left her blind on one side and she had to compensate. She wished she had another to cover for her. In practice some of the lionesses her age seemed to know and aid her by moving along it and muttering what was missing from that blind side. But weakness was not allowed amongst the pride and sharing it would earn scorn. Her old “friends” could not and weren’t allowed to be always present and she WOULD make up for it as Princess. Yet as if feeling her princess’s wishes, her old spar mate Baako appeared from the smoke, her own burning branch sizzling along her maw. She dropped it and spoke.

“Princess. First two phases are in motion. Captives secured and reports speak of the majordomo and king already aware. We must retreat to the Queen to tell her progress and for her permission in starting phase three.” If she could feel anything, it be sorrow knowing her “old friend” from childhood no longer referred to her by name and always with this intense air. The little bit of searching sorrow in Baako’s eyes spoke a yearning to return to such times. But she had numbed herself and so shoved it aside as she nodded assertion in hearing her words. The nod dimissed her, the princess picking up pace towards the designated meet up. She unlike Baako did not drop her branch even though fire was gone with red embers at the end. The power was sweet feeling and she had nothing speak of. Not to her. Not anymore.

They weaved and ran between flames and smoke, soon catching sight of the others. Running towards the same destination. The smoke and flame giving way to ash and fields that smoldering. Where embers flew in snapping flames sputtering out. The glow was still intense, and smoke still covered the sky. But her the fire was no danger any more, it was safe and soon the stone overlooking the carnage and selected outpost came into view. The princess did not slow as the others did, going towards it and the full pride waited on it.

As she clambered the rocks, she took note and passed several members. Some of them lionesses, ones who’d been part of the original Outlander pride and were full obedient and loyal. Others captured and converted prisoners with wars in the Vale, scared and scarred they followed out of fear. And lastly the former rogues turned members who sided with them out of the pleasures that were to gain from Outlander cause. They didn’t bow like the true Outlanders to the princess or shrunk like the captured. The large beasts with full, big maned, muscular and scaring from before and after joining, eyed her with cruel grins. The bows given more in jest then true respect. And like her the only ones still holding their smoldering branches. Enjoying the power it awarded rather than fearing the burn that could follow. She ignored them, knowing she could punish them later. For now, the true targets were in sight.

Up on top, in sight of the western border and the river they’d crossed earlier whikel to the Eats the lands still burned if not in ashen state. And upon its top sat with cold chilling stillness the older female next to the jittering, maniacal energy of a young male, was the two royals. The princess passed all others, seeing out of corner as pride reunited and conversed. Some of them were those of expectant or nursing mothers, greeting the males and sisters for they would not be allowed to partake with such valuable assets they provided. But her mother wanted all present just as she commanded breeding expectations from all the pride who were capable. She didn’t allow herself to feel the sick turning as she knew what that meant for some of the pride. Instead thanking the fact as royal she was spared until a proper mate could be made for her.

She ignored this all and went to the top, bowing her head to the cold lioness watching the flames and muttering pacing male alternating between glee at the destruction and angry muttering at being denied taking part. Now showing proper subservience, she answered.

“Mother.” She stated. “The flames are in place, the kingdom in panic and our forces have spotted the king and his bird responding. The royals and pride will soon follow.”

Her mother didn’t do anything but continue to watch the burning horiszon, flames accenting her red orbs too well, but her brother did respond. “And the captives.”

She bowed again in respect; she might find it humorous at this change towards her brother. But she did not allow herslef to feel such for she would not reminisce. Not remember those different times and how she shared them with HIM. Her false brother.

“Taken, Baako assures me and being held for your command. We wait on your orders. Phase one and two are complete.”

After a long stretch, with her brother cackling in glee over the matter. She felt impatience as she felt her brother’s need to act, to move and ripe, tear and kill, wash over her. But the princess remained bowed and waiting. Her mother was calm, thinking, betraying none of the rage she had within. Showing none of it now, and the princess had witnessed before. But when she looked to her daughter, there was the same if not worse mania her son had in burning red eyes.

“Good.” She started, nearly too quietly. Before rising and began padding down calling just loud enough to be heard. “We go to the front lines, only our selected guards may follow. All others are to scavenge and hunt for needed prey. Once we have enough to eat, retreat and cover your tracks. Dismissed.”

She didn’t wait for an answer, or to see their response. Knew it be followed for all knew the high risks at disobeying. The pride fanned out or moved in lines while two males broke off to follow the queen and her two children. They were to not be seen or interact unless in emergency. It was a safety measure for the Queen was too paranoid for anything more. Couldn’t risk losing herself or her children for this cause. She no longer trusted much of anything.

“Save us.” the princess thought, glancing at her brother who was one of only two allowed to walk and be so close to the Queen. Who were WELCOME beside her. It was the smallest bit of joy she felt but she revealed in it.

She heard her mother alongside her, her brother on the other with guards trotting at the rear. Felt her pulse quicken in excitement. And she couldn’t deny it was not only causing the thrill to be close and run with her mother and brother. No, it was the fact she would most likely after all this time be seeing him again. The one she once called brother but been forsaken to weak, plush life. She would for the first time lay her own eyes upon him and make him see what he wrought. Quite literally the mark he’d left on them as she again noted her own blind side that was the one nearest her mother.

“Were coming Kovu.” She whispered to the smokey, hot air. Wanting to spit the name in disgust. “Your family has come, to visit. And make you see your mistake. And pay for it like all the others you aligned to. All will burn, with you the first to feel it.”

Next up and we switch off to new viewpoint and boy the flames aren't the only thing dangerous out and about.

Story wise, it took a bit longer but again much to cover. Things have changed much for both ends. and yeah its not been exactly a posive change for the Outlanders end.

Art wise like this scene, used TLK2 screenshot to get the colors and look and afterward ran with it. it came out really good for something so quick. Mood was really well captured including the dark figures onf the roscks. I like how that turned out.

Tata for now!
